Compact Table Saw Showdown: Bosch vs Dewalt

With the new Bosch GTS1031 table saw earning glowing reviews, we thought it was time to pit it against one of the best compact table saws: the DeWalt DW745. By Stuart Deutsch

Bosch GTS1031

These smaller table saws, which come in a compact benchtop setup rather than with legs like a traditional table saw, are designed as portable job site saws. But they work just as well in a home workshop, and are ideal for shops that are tight on space.

The Bosch and the DeWalt have many of their specs in common: Both include a 15 Amp motor, 10-inch blade, 3 1/8-inch depth of cut when the blade is set at 90 degrees and 2.2-inch depth of cut at 45 degrees. And safety features on both saws include a riving knife, anti-kickback pawls, blade guard and an included push stick.

Features

The GTS1031 is Bosch's newest table saw, designed for portability and intended to be light enough that you could carry it with one hand. Its rip fence is designed for quick and easy movement, and clamps into channels on opposite sides of the table to keep things consistently square without the need for frequent adjustment. Two notable advantages for the GTS1031: Its 5000 RPM max no-load speed compared to the 3850 RPM for the DeWalt, and the fact that you can use a 1/2-inch dado set with it (though it requires separate TS1013 dado throat insert).

Family Game ? The Perfect Game Game Game for Any Family or ...

To begin this extremely fun acting game, choose one person to leave the room. All the others playing will collectively decide on an adverb. Examples might be: humorously, obnoxiously, quietly, forcefully, etc (there are certain adjectives that work just as well). The person who left the room (referred to as “it”) will come back in and randomly choose people to act out certain verbs. But, the people acting must act out the verb in the manner of the adverb. For example, if the adverb chosen by the group is quietly, “it” may ask someone to: eat, walk, dance, sing, read, jump, etc. If walk is the verb chosen, the person who is acting will have to act out walking, but do so quietly. And, there is no talking allowed while acting.Family Game - The Perfect Game for Any Family or Group Get-Together

ACT THE ADVERB

“It” will then try to guess what the “adverb” is. After the first person acts out walking, “it” will guess what they think the adverb is. If they do not correctly guess quietly, they will ask another person from the group to act the adverb, but this time they must chose a different verb. Now, someone may have to read, but do so quietly. If “it” does not guess the adverb correctly after the second acting, they only have one more chance. After the 3rd person acts a (different) verb in the manner of the adverb, if ‘it’ still can not guess what the adverb is, they do not receive a point. If, however, they do guess correctly what the adverb is within the three guesses, they get a point. Each person will take a turn being “it” by leaving the room and having to come back in and try to guess the chosen adverb – each round the group will choose a new adverb to be acted out. The first person to score 5 points is the winner!

GOP tax expert chosen as to aide to budget panel (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The co-chairs of a budget "supercommittee" responsible for coming up with at least $1.2 trillion in deficit cuts announced Tuesday that they have chosen a Republican tax expert as their top staff aide.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, have selected Mark Prater, a tax lawyer with the Senate Finance Committee, as the supercommittee's staff director. They said in a joint statement that Prater's two decades of experience as a top GOP aide on the panel bring the know-how and experience required to help the supercommittee succeed.

""Mark has a well-earned reputation for being a workhorse who members of both parties have relied on," Murray and Hensarling said. "We look forward to working with him and are confident that his approach and expertise will be valuable as we weigh the difficult but necessary choices ahead."

The supercommittee was established under legislation enacted last month to increase the government's ability to borrow. It is charged with finding at least $1.2 trillion in deficit cuts as a condition for President Barack Obama to be allowed to order further debt limit increases. If the committee, which is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, deadlocks or if Congress fails to enact its recommendations by Christmas, automatic spending cuts covering both defense and domestic accounts would be triggered starting in 2013.

Prater is highly thought of on Capitol Hill. He assisted lawmakers in the drafting of tax legislation such as the Bush-era cuts in taxes on income, investments, married couples and families with children. And he can play the three-dimensional chess that's needed to help lawmakers do the deals required to forge consensus on complicated legislation. He's also steeped in the minutia of various tax breaks and preferences that many lawmakers say are wasteful and inefficient.

"Mark has built a well-deserved reputation as an honest broker ? not just a `Republican staffer' ? well capable of finding the middle ground and producing results," said Bill Dauster, a top adviser to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. "His longstanding relationships with folks on both sides of the aisle will serve him and the Joint Committee well as they do their important work."

The Finance Committee which Prater serves has sweeping jurisdiction over taxes and federal health care programs.

Separately, GOP aides said the Republicans on the panel were holding a strategy session Tuesday in advance of an official first meeting of the committee next month.
