Report: Stuxnet cyberweapon older than believed

LONDON (AP) ? An anti-virus firm says the cyberweapon that targeted an Iranian nuclear plant is older than previously believed, a finding that may shed more light on a mysterious series of attacks attributed by security experts to U.S. and Israeli intelligence.

The Stuxnet worm, which experts believe damaged or destroyed centrifuges at Iran's Natanz plant in about 2009, revolutionized the cybersecurity field because it was the first known computer attack specifically tailored to cause real-world damage.

Previously the earliest samples of Stuxnet dated from 2009, but Symantec's findings push the timeline back.

The company said late Tuesday it found a primitive version of the worm dating back to November 2007 and that one element of the program dates to late 2005.

U.S. and Israeli officials have declined to comment on the attacks.

Mineral diversity clue to early Earth chemistry

Feb. 28, 2013 ? Mineral evolution is a new way to look at our planet's history. It's the study of the increasing diversity and characteristics of Earth's near-surface minerals, from the dozen that arrived on interstellar dust particles when the Solar System was formed to the more than 4,700 types existing today. New research on a mineral called molybdenite by a team led by Robert Hazen at Carnegie's Geophysical Laboratory provides important new insights about the changing chemistry of our planet as a result of geological and biological processes.

The work is published by Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Mineral evolution is an approach to understanding Earth's changing near-surface geochemistry. All chemical elements were present from the start of our Solar System, but at first they formed comparatively few minerals -- perhaps no more than 500 different species in the first billion years. As time passed on the planet, novel combinations of elements led to new minerals.

Molybdenite is the most common ore mineral of the critical metallic element molybdenum. Hazen and his team, which includes fellow Geophysical Laboratory scientists Dimitri Sverjensky and John Armstrong, analyzed 442 molybdenite samples from 135 locations and ages ranging from 2.91 billion years old to 6.3 million years old. They specifically looked for trace contamination of the element rhenium in the molybdenite, because rhenium can be used to use to gauge historical chemical reactions with oxygen from the environment.

They found that concentrations of rhenium, a trace element that is sensitive to oxidation reactions, increased significantly -- by a factor of eight -- over the past three billion years. The team suggests that this change reflects the increasing near-surface oxidation conditions from the Archean Eon more than 2.5 billion years ago to the Phanerozoic Eon less than 542 million years ago. This oxygen increase was a consequence of what's called the Great Oxidation Event, when Earth's atmospheric oxygen levels skyrocketed as a consequence of oxygen-producing photosynthetic microbes.

In addition, they found that the distribution of molybdenite deposits through time roughly correlates with five periods of supercontinent formation, the assemblies of Kenorland, Nuna, Rodinia, Pannotia, and Pangea. This correlation supports previous findings from Hazen and his colleagues that mineral formation increases markedly during episodes of continental convergence and supercontinent assembly and that a dearth of mineral deposits form during periods of tectonic stability.

"Our work continues to demonstrate that a major driving force for mineral evolution is hydrothermal activity associated with colliding continents and the increasing oxygen content of the atmosphere caused by the rise of life on Earth," Hazen said.

Hazen's other co-authors were Joshua Golden, Melissa McMillan, Robert T. Downs, Grethe Hystad, and Ian Goldstein of the University of Arizona; and Holly J. Stein and Aaron Zimmerman of Colorado State University (the former also of the Geological Survey of Norway).

FlatIronsCarpet.com ? Home Improvement Ideas To Give Your ...

TIP! Protect the floor in any room you are going to paint. In this way, you can avoid damaging your carpeting and flooring.

Do you see yourself as a home improvement guru like the ones on TV? Do you know the steps for making complex repairs on old or broken appliances? Read this article to get more ideas on projects you might want to consider.

TIP! Do not rush into a home improvement job. Whenever you plan to paint, don?t forget to throw coverings over furniture ahead of time.

Consider padding the edges of sharp furniture if you have small children or clumsy animals. You can even turn this into a stylish do-it-yourself project. You can find cheap corner protectors in any store, or apply foam tape yourself on sharp edges. Another thing you can try is to tape dangerous wiring down that could be harmful to your children.

TIP! If your space is limited, think about purchasing a small, stackable washer and dryer. These combo units are great space savers in apartments and homes with not a lot of extra space.

You may be thinking of adding a traditional wood fireplace to your home. You may want to rethink that. While a traditional fireplace looks great, it is an inefficient heat source. Most of the energy is lost through the chimney. Also, the fire needs a lot of fresh air that will use up the oxygen that is inside your home.

TIP! Try composting to reduce how much garbage you put out. A compost pile is easily started by choosing a spot in your yard, and layering grass cuttings, coffee grounds, veggies, fruit peelings and other organic matter into a pile.

It is not necessary to completely replace your cabinetry in order to freshen your kitchen. It is possible for a bit of paint to make a huge difference. There are quite a few choices when it comes to finishes for your cabinetry. So, do a little research, pick something you love and have fun creating your own unique look!

TIP! Are you trying to sell your property? Projects around the home can easily increase your home?s worth. You could get new appliances for your kitchen and include this expense into the asking price to attract more buyers.

If you aren?t happy with how your home looks, it may be time to consider a renovation. Renovating your home allows you the opportunity to build it exactly as you?d like. A well-planned renovation is far more affordable than purchasing a new home; it also gives you a greater degree of control over your surroundings.

TIP! If you want to spruce up your bathroom or your kitchen without a complete remodel, you should think about new lighting fixtures and accents. It is possible for an electrician to upgrade old-style track lighting for under $1000.

Some people may have some skills with home improvement, but true knowledge takes years of work and experience to gain. There is always more to learn, and your skills can always be improved upon. You will be above the novice level in no time if you heed these tips.

Groupon shares dive 24 percent on "underwhelming" forecast

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Groupon Inc lost almost a quarter of its market value on Wednesday after the company began to take a smaller cut of revenue on daily deals, sacrificing revenue and profits to attract and keep merchants.

"This raises questions about how these guys are going to be able to scale the business," said Tom White, an analyst at Macquarie. "The forecast is underwhelming."

Groupon shares fell 22 percent to $4.65 in after hours trading on Wednesday.

The Chicago-based company started sharing more money from its deals with merchants early in the fourth quarter to persuade them to run an offer for the first time or work on another offer.

That dented revenue and profit in the fourth quarter, Chief Financial Officer Jason Child said in an interview.

"We are focused on driving growth," he said. "We will make the investments we feel we need to optimize for growth and merchant profitability."

Fourth-quarter revenue rose to $638.3 million from $492.2 million in the year-ago period. The company also reported a net loss and an operating loss in the latest period.

Groupon was expected to make 3 cents a share on revenue of $638 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company forecast first-quarter revenue of $560 million to $610 million. This is sharply below the $650 million average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Groupon Goods, the company's discounted product sales business, generated a lot of the fourth-quarter revenue growth. However, sales growth will slow in the first quarter, as is typical with other e-commerce businesses, Child said.

The Goods business also has lower margins than Groupon's original daily deals business, he noted.

The cut in its so-called "take rate", which many analysts had speculated was necessary to revive participation among merchants in its Internet offers, contributed to weak fourth-quarter results. That was also partly behind the disappointing first-quarter revenue forecast.

A larger-than-expected seasonal decline in the company's Goods e-commerce business also drove the weaker first-quarter forecast.

Sequester Fallout - The Risk For Republicans (The Note)

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone )

NOTABLES

EXCLUSIVE - A RARE SEQUESTER MEETING AT THE WHITE HOUSE. A Congressional source tells ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl that the top four Congressional leaders - Boehner, Reid, Pelosi and McConnell - will meet with President Obama at the White House on Friday to attempt to negotiate a way to avoid the across-the-board spending cuts that both sides have said should be avoided. This meeting - the very first one the President has had with Republican leaders to talk about the across-the-board cuts known as the sequester - will come after the cuts actually go into effect (midnight Thursday). White House Press Secretary Jay Carney would not confirm the meeting, but the source tells ABC News that the White House reached out to the Congressional leadership on Tuesday afternoon to request the meeting. http://abcn.ws/XCha6a

DAMAGE CONTROL: Most Americans think both Barack Obama and the Republicans in Congress are mishandling government spending, according to a new ABC News-Washington Post poll out this morning, but on the brink of across-the-board budget cuts, it's the GOP that receives disproportionately more flak, including from its own partisan and ideological base. ABC polling analyst Greg Holyk notes that while 52 percent of adults in the poll disapprove of Obama's handling of federal spending, that jumps to 67 percent disapproval for the GOP, a substantial 15-point gap in the president's favor. Majorities even of Republicans and conservatives rate the Republican Party negatively on its handling of the budget. Obama, by contrast, retains broad support in his partisan corner. And his approval among independents, though weak, is 13 percentage points better than the GOP's. http://abcn.ws/128PkDd

ABC NEWS NAMES POLITICAL DIRECTOR: An announcement from ABC News President Ben Sherwood: "I am pleased to announce that Rick Klein is moving into an important role as Political Director of ABC News. In a job created by the legendary Hal Bruno, Rick will oversee the political unit and lead our digital efforts around politics while helping to steer the network's coverage of major news events on all platforms. Rick's sharp instincts and penetrating insights played a critical role throughout the 2012 election cycle, helping guide World News reporting on campaigns and political battles in Washington. Whether contributing to 'The Note' or co-anchoring live-stream coverage from the conventions, Rick plays a key role in our online efforts. And as co-host of 'Top Line,' Rick has helped to make our 'Power Players' series with Yahoo! one of the most watched video series online. ? As you can see in recent days, our powerhouse political team is bulking up and taking shape for the most important news, debate, drama and intrigue of this year and beyond."

THE ROUNDTABLE

ABC's RICK KLEIN: Can we have a real fight now? Chuck Hagel is confirmed, as he was always going to be, and the sequester is going into effect, as it never was supposed to. On the surface, the new ABC News-Washington Post poll shows more danger for the GOP than for President Obama as the budget cuts play out in slow motion - the president has the public on his side on handling budget crises. But that only underscores the stakes for the president in getting the nation to care. In an era of fake fights, and exaggerations around impact of government actions, skepticism abounds.

ABC's CHRIS GOOD: The next fiscal-crisis date to remember is March 27. With no news of an imminent grand deal, budget sequestration is poised to take effect on Friday. We may find out whether the administration has faked its warnings of long TSA lines, a porous border, slower extreme-weather forecasts, prison violence, and terrorist plots going un-thwarted. The worst consequences might not be felt until early April, when government furloughs begin, but a convenient deadline awaits before then: On March 27, the current government-funding measure will expire. Congress and Obama will have to agree to extend current levels or modify them. It seems that would be a good time for sides to agree on something, even if it only includes enough deficit reduction to buy a few months. Bottom line: Sequestration could happen, then be nullified by an agreement in late March before the worst purported calamities befall us.

ABC'S SHUSHANNAH WALSHE: The group of 80 plus Republicans that have already signed the Supreme Court amicus brief in support of same sex marriage is an interesting and somewhat diverse group of Republicans, but according to at least one of the signers there are many more who are almost "there" on the issue, but the politics of the issue are hard to overcome. Margaret Hoover is a GOP strategist who worked in the George W. Bush White House alongside Ken Mehlman, who spearheaded the effort to get prominent Republicans to sign on to the brief. She has been working on the issue for years and says "if the Republican Party wants to be relevant in blue states, wants to be relevant on the coasts, wants to be relevant in urban areas, we have to be right on this issue." Hoover noted there are many more Republicans that are supportive of same sex marriage "in their hearts," but because they are in elected office they are "not sure about the politics."

ABC's LUIS MARTINEZ: This morning officially marked a changing of the guard at the Pentagon when Chuck Hagel arrived there for his first day on the job. But it seems that even the new Defense Secretary is not immune to some worldly hazards. Hagel's arrival was scheduled for 7:30 a.m., but he arrived 40 minutes late as he was caught in DC traffic. Marine Lt. Gen. Thomas Waldhauser walked up to the door of Hagel's SUV and greeted the incoming secretary with a salute. Waldhauser will serve as Hagel's military aide - the same job he did for Leon Panetta. Afterward, Hagel and his wife Lillibet walked up the stairs into the building and turned to say "good morning" to the reporters on hand for his arrival. He has already been sworn in and he'll offer opening remarks to Pentagon staff at a 10:30 a.m. ceremony in the Pentagon Auditorium.

Tara Corrigan has served as part of "Team Obama" since September 2007."

-BOEHNER'S BIG NUMBER - 1,400 DAYS: An aide to House Speaker John Boehner e-mails The Note to remind that today marks 1,400 days since Senate Democrats passed a budget. "To highlight the occasion, and underscore the need to address our debt crisis with smarter spending cuts and reforms, we're releasing an infographic on things a person could do with their $52,000 share of the national debt," the aide says. "For example, your share of the debt could cover seven years' worth of grocery bills, four years of rent, and more." GRAPHIC: http://1.usa.gov/XFQuOP

VIDEO OF THE DAY: A TOUR OF THE MOST DANGEROUS PLACES IN THE WORLD WITH FORMER GEN. JAMES CARTWRIGHT. From the "genocidal type" war in Syria to the growing presence of al Qaeda affiliates in Northern Africa, former Gen. James Cartwright tells ABC's Martha Raddatz, host of the ABC News/Yahoo "Power Players"series "On the Radar" that he's concerned about the growing number of potentially volatile regions around the world. "They're spreading rather than consolidating," the retired general says of the dangerous areas around the world, known as hotspots. "Africa is probably the biggest one that we are?are seeing in the media right now with the Mali challenge, but that's not limited to Mali." The growing threat of Africa can be traced in large part to the expansion of al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist groups such as al Qaeda in the Maghreb (AQIM) - the group behind the recent hostage situation at a natural gas facility in Algeria. Cartwright says the threat posed by offspring al Qaeda groups in Africa shouldn't be underestimated. WATCH: http://yhoo.it/Yz7Luw

WHAT WE'RE READING

"THE REAL REASON WHY CHRIS CHRISTIE WASN'T INVITED TO CPAC," by The National Journal's Elahe Izadi . "New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was not invited to speak at the annual CPAC conference this year because he broke with conservatives on key issues over the past year, according to American Conservative Union Chairman Al Cardenas. Cardenas, whose group organizes the conference, wrote in an e-mail to National Journal that while CPAC was 'proud' to invite Christie last year based on his record of balancing the budget and taking on teachers unions, Christie's record over the past year is far less conservative. 'CPAC is like the all-star game for professional athletes; you get invited when you have had an outstanding year,' Cardenas said. 'Hopefully he will have another all-star year in the future, at which time we will be happy to extend an invitation. This is a conservative conference, not a Republican Party event.' Cardenas cited Christie's decision to expand Medicaid under President Obama's health care law and his support of a $60 billion aid package for Hurricane Sandy victims, which he argued was filled with wasteful spending." http://bit.ly/WgHEfw

TODAY ON THE HILL: ABC's Arlette Saenz and John Parkinson report: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he hopes there will be a vote on the confirmation of Jack Lew as Secretary of Treasury today. Meanwhile, Congressional leaders welcome President Obama to the Capitol for a ceremony unveiling a new statue of Rosa Parks. And this afternoon House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan and other House Republican leaders highlight the effects of the national debt on America's youth. The press conference will follow House Republicans' inaugural "Millennial Meetup" roundtable, in which they will meet with young leaders from across America to discuss the impact of the national debt and how to most effectively reduce it.

REPUBLICANS SUPPORTING GAY MARRIAGE WRITE SUPREME COURT BRIEF. The issue of same sex marriage is dividing the Republican Party as a group of more than 80 prominent members of the GOP ranging from Dick Cheney's daughter to four former governors have signed an amicus brief before the Supreme Court advocating for the legalization of gay marriage, reports ABC's Shushannah Walshe. The document, known as an amicus or "friend of the court" brief, is being submitted in support of a lawsuit aiming to strike down Proposition 8, the California ballot initiative that passed in 2008 banning same sex marriage. The existence of the brief was first reported by the New York Times. Signers included former congresswoman Mary Bono Mack of California, former presidential candidate Jon Huntsman and Meg Whitman, who supported Prop 8 when she ran for governor of California in 2010. Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, Richard Hanna of New York and former GOP national chairman Ken Mehlman also signed. In addition, three former Massachusetts governors - William Weld, Jane Swift, and Paul Cellucci - along with former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman are signers. The list also includes Republican attorney and Romney senior adviser Ben Ginsberg and other high profile GOP leaders, strategists, consultants, and staffers. http://abcn.ws/15haaho

OBAMA DENIES SEQUESTER 'SPIN' IN SHIPYARD SPEECH. President Obama yesterday took aim at skeptics of his dire warnings about the sequester, insisting the "meat-cleaver" approach to deficit reduction will harm the military, defense contractors, suppliers and their families the most if it hits in two days, reports ABC's Devin Dwyer. "I'm not interested in spin. I'm not interested in playing a blame game. At this point, all I'm interested in is just solving problems," Obama told a crowd of workers inside a submarine assembly facility at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia. "I want us to be able to look back five years from now, 10 years from now, and say we took care of our business and we put an end to some of these games that maybe, I guess, are entertaining for some but are hurting too many people," he said, referring to congressional Republicans. http://abcn.ws/WpsYoV

LIBERAL SUPER PAC BACKTRACKS ON 'RACIST' TWEETS AGAINST EX-LABOR SEC. A liberal super PAC in Kentucky is backtracking on tweets that accuse former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao of using influence over her husband, Sen. Mitch McConnell, to benefit the Chinese economy at America's expense. ABC's Sarah Parnass and Z. Byron Wolf reported that Progress Kentucky has disseminated many tweets in the past month supposedly drawing links from McConnell, R-Ky., his wife and his father-in-law to Chinese business interests. WFPL News of Louisville first made note of the tweets, referencing one sent on Valentine's Day reading, "This woman has the ear of @McConnellPress - she's his #wife. May explain why your job moved to #China," and linking to an article that accused Chao of racist attitudes toward U.S. workers based on remarks she made in 2007. The article referenced in that accusation portrayed Chao's expressing concern about America's ability to compete with foreign workers. "American employees must be punctual, dress appropriately and have good personal hygiene," Chao is quoted as saying in that article. "They need anger management and conflict-resolution skills, and they have to be able to accept direction. Too many young people bristle when a supervisor asks them to do something." http://abcn.ws/XeLx1s

HAPPENING TODAY: From an aide to the National Republican Senatorial Committee: While Ashley Judd and the Kentucky Democratic Party condemned the attack, National Democrats and prominent Democratic Officials from Kentucky remained silent including: DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, DSCC Chairman Michael Bennet, DCCC Chairman Steve Israel, Senate Leaders Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, and Congressman John Yarmuth (D-KY). The NRSC will call on each of them to respond to the attack. "Leading Democrats should condemn Progress Kentucky's disgusting attack and should refuse to accept funding or resources from the Super PAC," said NRSC spokesman Brad Dayspring. "Democratic Leaders' silence sends the signal that this kind of racist attack is acceptable, and we sincerely hope that isn't the case."

Early results point to Italy vote gridlock

ROME (AP) ? The prospect of political paralysis hung over Italy on Monday as partial official results in crucial elections showed an upstart protest campaign led by a comedian making stunning inroads, and mainstream forces of center-left and center-right likely splitting control of Parliament's two houses.

The story of the election in the eurozone's third largest economy was shaping up to be the astonishing vote haul of comic-turned-politician Beppe Grillo, whose 5 Star Movement has capitalized on a wave of voter disgust with the ruling political class.

Another surprise has been the return as a political force of billionaire media mogul Silvio Berlusconi, who was forced from the premiership at the end of 2011 by Italy's debt crisis, and whose forces now seemed poised to capture the Italian Senate. His main rival, the center-left Pier Luigi Bersani, was headed toward victory in Parliament's lower house.

The unfolding murky result raised the possibility of new elections in the coming months and bodes badly for the nation's efforts to pass the tough reforms it needs to snuff out its economic crisis. After surging in the wake of exit polls, Milan's main stock index slumped with first projections before closing up slightly.

The Italian election has been one of the most fluid in the last two decades thanks to the emergence of Grillo's 5 Star Movement, which has throbbed with anger with politics as usual. The movement came against a backdrop of harsh austerity measures imposed by technocrat Premier Mario Monti ? who has fared miserably in the elections.

Many eligible voters didn't cast ballots, and a low turnout is generally seen as penalizing established parties. The turnout, at just under 75 percent, was the lowest in national elections since the republic was formed after World War II. Disgust with traditional party politics likely turned off voters, although snow and rain ? this was Italy's first winter time national vote ? also could be a factor.

The decisions Italy's government makes over the next several months promise to have a deep impact on whether Europe can decisively stem its financial crisis. As the eurozone's third-largest economy, its problems can rattle market confidence in the whole bloc and analysts have worried it could fall back into old spending habits.

Bersani, a former communist, has reform credential as the architect of a series of liberalization measures and has shown a willingness to join with Monti, if necessary, to form a stable government. But he could be hamstrung by the more left-wing of his party.

His party would have to win both houses to form a stable government, and given the uncertainty of possible alliances, a clear picture of prospects for a new Italian government could take days. It is all but impossible that Bersani would team up in a "grand coalition" with his arch-enemy Berlusconi.

Italy's borrowing costs have reflected the optimism that the country will stick to its reform plans.

The interest rate on Italy's 10-year bonds, an indicator of investor confidence in a country's ability to manage its debt, fell to 4.19 percent in afternoon trading Monday. Last summer, at the height of concern over Italy's economy, that interest rate was hovering at about 6.36 percent.

Milan's stock exchange closed slightly higher, with the benchmark FTSE MIB up 0.73 percent to 16,351 points.

With ballots from more than two-thirds of polling stations counted in Senate races, Interior Ministry figures showed, Bersani and his allies had just over 32 percent while Berlusconi and his coalition partners were pulling just under 30 percent. Grillo had more than 24 percent.

More important than the overall national numbers, however, was the state-of-play in large swing regions ? and Berlusconi was projected to win those.

Italy's complex electoral law calls for the Senate seats to be divvied up according to how candidates fare region by region, and Berlusconi appeared to be winning big in Lombardy, and also ahead in the closely watched regions of Sicily and Campania, around Naples.

A Berlusconi triumph in those key regions would likely hand him control of the upper chamber, which in Italy's legislative system is as powerful as the lower house.

Bersani was leading in the lower chamber, where electoral law enables the biggest vote-getter there to end up with a bonus of more than 50 percent of the seats.

Monti's centrist coalition was having a terrible election, with partial results giving his alliance roughly 9 percent. Although respected abroad for his measures that helped stave off Italy's debt crisis, the economist has widely been blamed for financial suffering caused by austerity cuts.

Analysts saw two big stories in Italy's election.

"The first is the big surprising increase scored by the 5 Star Movement, and the other is the disappointing result" of Monti's coalition, said Massimo Franco, a columnist with Corriere della Sera.

Berlusconi, who was forced from office in November 2011 by the debt crisis, has sought to close the gap by promising to reimburse an unpopular tax ? a tactic that brought him within a hair's breadth of winning the 2006 election. The billionaire media mogul only a few days ago told voters if need be, he'd reimburse the tax to them by shelling out from his own pocket to the tune of several billion euros (dollars).

Grillo's forces are the greatest unknown. His protest movement against the entrenched political class has gained in strength following a series of corporate scandals that only seemed to confirm the worst about Italy's establishment. If his self-styled political "tsunami" sweeps into Parliament with a big chunk of seats, Italy could be in store for a prolonged period of political confusion that would spook the markets. He himself won't hold any office, due to a manslaughter conviction

Most analysts believe Bersani would seek an alliance with center-right Monti to secure a stable government, assuming parties gathered under Monti's centrist banner gain enough votes.

While left-leaning Bersani has found much in common with Monti, a large part of his party's base is considerably further to the left and could rebel.

SoCal Catholics Demand Mahony "Stay Home" from Rome

Thousands of signatures demanding that retired Cardinal Roger Mahony withdraw from voting in upcoming papal conclave were set to be delivered Saturday afternoon to a North Hollywood church, where Mahony has a residence.

The former archbishop of Los Angeles, Mahony was stripped of his public and administrative?duties in January for his role in shielding alleged priest child molesters. But that does not affect his standing with Rome.

"It?s a symbolic statement to say we will be heard," said Chris Pumpelly, spokesman for Washington, D.C.-based Catholics United.

"There is pain in this church and we will no longer be silenced. We love the church. We just can?t stand this crisis of leadership."

Mahony lives at St. Charles Borromeo Church, but does not preside over any sacraments, church officials said.

While not legally binding, the petition has garnered 10,000 signatures, Pumpelly said. The petition was expected to be delivered Saturday afternoon, he said.

"We?re saying we want to be heard," Pumpelly said. "There are victims who are hurting; let?s not hurt them anymore."

The petition is to be delivered the same day Mahony was set to testify under oath about the alleged sexual abuse within the Los Angeles archdiocese -- the largest in the nation -- during his guardianship.

Calls to the lawyer in charge of questioning Mahony had not been returned by Saturday afternoon.

Demonstrators want the former archbishop of LA to recuse himself from the papal selection to "avoid bringing further scandal to the church" during a time "that should be joyous," Pumpelly said.

He estimated that between 10 and 20 lay Catholics will be at the demonstration to hand deliver the signatures to the parish office.

The online petition ? posted on Catholics-United.org ? has been garnering signatures for the past week and has netted signatures from as far away as Australia, Germany and Ireland.

Pumpelly said he plans to join other lay Catholics Sunday to continue gathering signatures from faithful attending Mass at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral.

On Saturday, Mahony tweeted that he was "just a few short hours"?away from departing for Rome to join his colleagues in selecting a new pope.

Pope Benedict XVI announced earlier this month that he would step down on Feb. 28, making him the first pope to abdicate since the Middle Ages. The 85-year-old pontiff said his decision was due to "an advanced age"?that made it difficult to perform his papal duties.

Do i need special travel insurance for a cruise holiday? | Travel with ...

All posts

Cruise insuranceIf you?re looking for a getaway that combines luxury and relaxation with an opportunity to see some new sights and explore some of the world?s most picturesque locations, a cruise holiday may be the perfect solution. From the Scandinavian fjords to the beaches of the Mediterranean, cruise holidays can take you almost anywhere in the world at a smooth, easy going pace. But as with any trip abroad, it?s advisable to make sure you?re protected by travel insurance in case anything goes wrong.

Because some providers offer cruise travel insurance as a separate product, many potential holidaymakers believe that standard travel insurance doesn?t cover cruise holidays. This isn?t generally the case, but there are certain circumstances that you should be aware of before purchasing your insurance and setting sail.

Is cruise insurance different?

Cruise insurance adviceThe difference between cruise travel insurance and regular travel insurance is generally minimal. It might represent a partnership between the insurer and a specific travel company, or possibly offer tailored extra features. Sometimes it might simply be in place to inform customers that cruise travel isn?t excluded from their policy ? which is unusual but not unheard of, so always worth checking.

If you already have regular travel insurance or you?re in the market for it, the first thing you should look out for is any relevant exclusions. They may not be explicitly related to cruise travel in the wording of your policy, but could nevertheless be significant. For example, most travel insurance policies will cover medical aid should you fall ill ? including transport to a local hospital if necessary. If you fall ill on a cruise and need to be airlifted or otherwise transported back home or to the nearest country, this may not always be covered, as it?s likely to be considerably more expensive than returning from a regular holiday.

Cancellation costs

cancelled cruise holiday insuranceAnother issue might be cancellation costs. If you are forced to cancel a holiday due to unforeseen events, your travel insurance will often allow you to reclaim the money. But because of the greater expense, if there is a limit on the policy, the maximum amount you can claim back may fall far short of the cost of a luxury cruise. Speak to your insurance provider and see if they can offer anything that covers you for the full cost of your trip.

Finally, many cruise holidays include activities ? from water sports to on-shore hiking.? Make sure any activities outlined in your holiday plan are covered by your insurance. By keeping a keen eye on the details, you should have no problem procuring good value travel insurance that lets you free to enjoy a stress-free trip.

RIAS Travel Insurance specialise in helping customers enjoy a stress-free experience by providing extensive, affordable travel insurance for when you?re on holiday.

A little too suggestive? Actress Anne Hathaway arrives at the Oscars on Feb. 24, 2013 in Hollywood, California.

By Rina Raphael, TODAY

Is it getting chilly in L.A.?

Anne Hathaway's 2013 Oscars gown went viral the moment she stepped on the red carpet, but probably not for the reason she intended. The Best Supporting Actress nominee wore a pale pink Prada dress which featured rather, well, unfortunate darts.

"My mom says it's business in front, party in the back," Hathaway joked on the red carpet on Sunday.

(More like the other way around?)

Of course, it wasn't long before the unique dress was the talk of the Twitterverse, even inspiring a mock Twitter account (sample posts include: "I'm cold. Would anyone mind if Anne wore the red carpet?"). Others called the dress "perky," "Paltrow-esque" and "leaving little to the imagination," all things which can be viewed as either good ... or bad.

What do you think of Anne Hathaway's fashion choice? Are you a fan? Let us know!

Sandy Koufax welcomed back to spring training

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? Even from a distance, the rangy old man in gray uniform pants and a blue hoodie clearly is no ordinary coach. Players pay uncommonly close attention to his advice, and fans crane their necks as he moves easily around the Los Angeles Dodgers' spring training complex.

Up close, it's unmistakably Sandy Koufax, maybe the greatest left-hander ever to step on a mound.

On another sparkling day in Arizona, the 77-year-old Hall of Famer is in his element ? teaching, joking around and relishing baseball's camaraderie during another spring in the sunshine.

"I enjoy it. I've always enjoyed it," Koufax said. "I like talking pitching. It may be the only thing I've ever known, or been good at."

Koufax hadn't worn a major league uniform for more than two decades until the Dodgers got him back in blue this spring as a special adviser to owner Mark Walter. After years of arm's-length relationships with the Dodgers' various owners and a few springs working with the Mets, Koufax has accepted the embrace of the big-money ownership group that's eager to restore the beloved franchise's connection with its past while moving into a promising future.

"If everybody stays healthy and everybody lives up to their expectations here, this is a great ballclub," Koufax said. "There's a lot of talented people in this camp. The best money can buy."

Koufax works with Dodgers pitchers and their regular coaches in the mornings, making small adjustments and suggestions ? a change in arm angle out of the windup, or maybe a different foot placement on the rubber out of the stretch. He's modest about his help, claiming no special insight that the pitchers or catchers couldn't get from other sources.

"There's no one way to do this," Koufax said. "There's just so many ways to pitch to get people out. There's the best way to throw, and then there's another way. That's pitching. Sometimes people get people out because they don't do everything right. Ball movement is still the most important thing."

Nearly 46 years after his early retirement, the current Dodgers are all aware of the weight of Koufax's words. Manager Don Mattingly still read a list of Koufax's accomplishments to them earlier this spring.

Three Cy Young Awards. Four World Series titles. Four no-hitters. An NL MVP award and two World Series MVP honors in just 12 seasons in Brooklyn and Los Angeles.

"Sandy is just really like one of the guys," Mattingly said. "I know he has that aura about him of being kind of ? everybody is afraid to talk to him almost, but with us, it's great."

Indeed, Koufax seems perfectly comfortable around the Dodgers, chatting with everybody in sight as he roams the complex. The descriptions of a taciturn, reclusive talent forced out of the game too soon by arthritis in his left elbow just don't match the charming fellow high-fiving Andre Ethier's two young sons before giving a rare interview.

"I'm trying to figure out who says I'm private," Koufax said with a grin. "I'm at the Final Four. I go to golf tournaments. I go to the movies. I go to dinner. I live my life. Somebody wrote that 50 years ago, and they're still writing that. ... I don't care what anybody says. I'm past caring."

At 35 pounds lighter than his playing weight, Koufax still moves with the grace of a man from a younger generation. He relishes a lively discussion with pitchers and other instructors, including Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, who welcomed Koufax to camp.

"He's outgoing. He's got suggestions," Mattingly said. "He sees stuff. He'll ask me questions about a popup thing we do, or how we're going to run things. Yeah, we talk. He's got a question about this or that, little stuff that he sees, or maybe the way they ran something a little differently."

Baseball people rarely miss the chance to thank Koufax for his impact on their lives. Ed Farmer, the Chicago White Sox's play-by-play radio broadcaster, got curveball tips from Koufax in the late 1960s and used them throughout a 13-year major league career.

After the two spoke this week, Farmer said Koufax "made me a lot of money."

"You've got to have clay to mold," Koufax replied. "Then some guys are granite, and you have to chip at it."

Koufax spent the 1970s as a minor league instructor for the Dodgers, and he has visited camp with former manager Joe Torre in recent years, although he never stayed more than a few days or did much teaching. He also worked with a few Mets pitchers in recent years at the behest of owner Fred Wilpon, his high-school buddy.

But Koufax last wore a uniform as a minor league pitching instructor in 1989, and he publicly split with the Dodgers during Fox's ownership tenure reportedly in a rift over a story published about him by another arm of the media conglomerate.

Los Angeles fans never forgot him ? in fact, they swarmed his car in Glendale as he left after his first day this week.

Koufax doesn't enjoy the rapturous attention, but he still loves baseball.

"It's fun," Koufax said, eyes sparkling beneath his gray Dodgers cap. "I'm having a good time. If I wasn't having a good time, I wouldn't be doing it."

Yusheng & Chinese New Year

Just who created the yusheng dish which has become synonymous with Chinese New Year in Singapore? Almost everyone?says it?s?the Sin Leong chef. Not me. Though I base my?belief on no more than sheer memory ?which may not be reliable.

As far as I?m concerned, the first time I ever tasted yusheng was in Kuala Lumpur hosted by my BFF ES on one of my visits there. At a Petaling Street eatery.

It was some time after the 1969 racial riots but before I took on real working responsibilities. Till then, I?d never tasted yusheng, perhaps due to the fact that I come from a family of hill turtles ;)

Anyway, I distinctly remember ES telling me that the garnshings of white radish strips, cucumber strips, etc were known as ?lap sap? or rubbish. And that the dish was only eaten?during the 7th day of the Chinese New Year?or Yun-Yat, day of the human being?or day of everyman.

Another pointer that yusheng might have originated from KL rather than SG is that when participants toss the largely raw ingredients (save for the crackers) they chant ?Lo hei?, a distinctly Cantonese phrase. KL is better known for speaking Cantonese, while SG?s major Chinese dialect is Hokein.

Since my first encounter with yusheng, however, it has?become so popular?that even typically western-oriented establishments like the Tanglin Club and Singapore Cricket Club start offering it?well be4 the dawn of Chinese New Year Day and don?t stop serving the dish till Chap Go Mei or the 15th Day of the Chinese New Year.

With the official end of Chinese New Year celebrations tonight ? Yuan Xiao Jie ???? I would like to share my memories of the various yusheng encounters I have had since Feb 1 :lol:

First taste was had at Jumbo Restaurant@ Dempsey where the Lunch Party had our monthly lunch. It was a luscious offering with plenty of sliced salmon waiting to be tossed.

yusheng

The next tasting came when AI dropped in from one of her globe-trotting trips and treated some friends and me to a meal at the Tanglin Club. As an absent member, she was raring to do some spending!

yusheng2a

Another yusheng was had at my sister n BIL?s home. Mum n I have been going there for kai nian fan for as long as my sister has been married. Their newly minted DIL rushed out to Jelita Cold Storage to get a portion as we are all addicted to the dish. She even splashed out on an extra portion of fish

yusheng3

Not to be out done, I rushed out on the 7th Day of the New Year and bought a serving from GWC Cold Storage for lunch. The $29 serving was loaded on veggies but the sliced salmon was so little I could have eaten it all by myself in one mouthful. But I didn?t add fish, as there were only five of us for lunch that day, the rest of the immediate family having gone to Malaysia to visit far-flung relatives.

yusheng5

The next yusheng I had was courtesy of old school mate JLS who treated us to the dish at our quarterly get together. A generous portion large enough to cater to 15 hungry ? and growing??women ;)

yusheng6

Then came Feb 21 when I went into yusheng overdrive. For lunch, I was at the ritualistic annual CNY lunch hosted by the Association of Banks in Singapore. This time, the event was at the Ritz Carlton and as to be expected, there was no stinting on the fish!

yusheng7

That night, it was dinner with the regular Thursday night yoga kakis at the Kampung Glam Community Club. Our instructors hosted and provided a veritable feast, especially their mum?s signature vegetarian yusheng which was as much a treat for the eye as for the stomach. In place of fish, young fresh coconute flesh was used. Healthy and utterly delicious!

IMAG0284

The final yusheng dish for the Year of the Black Water Snake was eaten at another extended family dinner (hosted by younger brother SY and wife)?at Xin Fut Kai, a vegetarian restaurant with a huge following at 282 Jalan Besar.

yushenglast

Am I tired of yusheng after this binge??The answer is a resounding ?no?.

Frankly, I don?t understand why it isn?t available all the year round, especially when the providers? profit margin must be wide enough to drive a bendy bus through!

Perhaps I shall go into the yusheng business?

No. 9 Jayhawks nip No. 14 Cowboys 68-67 in 2OT

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) ? After he'd missed time and time again all night long, for some reason Naadir Tharpe's final attempt just felt right when it left his hand.

And what a shot it was for No. 9 Kansas.

Tharpe connected on a short jumper in the lane with 16.5 seconds left in the second overtime, lifting the Jayhawks over No. 14 Oklahoma State 68-67 on Wednesday night for a critical win in the Big 12 championship race.

Tharpe had made only one of his first 11 shots, and Kansas (22-4, 10-3 Big 12) hadn't made a field goal in either overtime, before one finally fell through at just the right time.

"I knew I just had to make a play," said Tharpe, who was filling in at the point after starter Elijah Johnson fouled out.

Travis Releford scored 18 points and Jeff Withey had three double-overtime free throws among his 17 points for the Jayhawks, who are tied with No. 13 Kansas State for the conference lead with five games to go. Kansas has had at least a share of the Big 12 regular-season title for each of the past eight years, but that streak was in jeopardy against the surging Cowboys.

Markel Brown scored 20 points to lead Oklahoma State (19-6, 9-4), which had won seven straight ? including snapping the Jayhawks' 33-game home winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse earlier this month ? to move into a three-way tie for the league lead.

"Our whole focus is just to win the Big 12," Releford said. "Teams beat us. We knew we weren't going to run the table and go undefeated.

"Unfortunately, it just happened they beat us at home. We just were focused to come in and try to get a win."

Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State's star freshman, had 16 points but fouled out midway through the second extra period when he slammed into Releford after going airborne on a drive to the basket.

On the winning play, Tharpe isolated against Phil Forte and wiggled his way into the lane before popping in a jumper from the right side. Brown missed a jumper from the left wing with about 7 seconds left, and Releford dove along the sideline in front of Oklahoma State's bench to prevent the rebound from going out of bounds and instead let the final seconds tick off the clock.

"It's a hard pill to swallow," Brown said. "I felt like this game could have went either way. A double-overtime game, it was a tough one out there."

Neither team led by more than six during the classic with championship implications, and both had their chances to win it at the end of regulation and each overtime.

The Jayhawks' best-in-the-nation defense limited Oklahoma State to a season-low 32.8 percent shooting. Kansas missed its first seven shots after regulation, only escaping after Tharpe's play in crunch time.

"Neither team had any offense and he certainly made a huge play there late. Just huge," coach Bill Self said. "Biggest play of his life, I'm sure,"

With so many misses, naturally, each team's star freshman had his share.

Ben McLemore, on pace to replace Danny Manning as the highest-scoring freshman in Kansas history, misfired on his first eight shots before making three in a row in the second half. He had a season-low seven points.

Smart started out 0 for 9 before finally hitting a fallaway jumper along the right side of the lane to cut Oklahoma State's deficit to 53-51 with 3:20 left in regulation. Forte tied it soon after, making a pair of free throws after coming up with a steal.

Smart came out of the game once after hurting his right shoulder and again after tweaking his right ankle in the first half. He then got socked in the face by Withey early in the second half. But it wasn't until he got his fifth foul that he finally couldn't return.

"Marcus is a big key to this team, so once he fouled out, I was like, 'Oh, shoot! We need Marcus out there,'" Brown said. "He brings the toughness out there. He gets stops out there. No matter if he's shooting bad for the night, he still can make that big-time play for you."

The Jayhawks weren't able to close it out in regulation after Releford banked in a tricky scoop shot underneath for a 57-53 lead with 1:49 to play. Smart made one of two free throws at the opposite end and, after Withey missed inside for Kansas, he got out in transition for a 3-pointer to tie it with 1:11 to play.

Johnson crossed over Smart on a drive, getting him to fall down in the lane, but Michael Cobbins came over to the rescue and swatted Johnson's shot into the hands of Self on the Jayhawks' bench. Brian Williams knocked the ball away from Tharpe to give OSU a chance at the win, but Smart missed a wild, off-balance jumper from the right wing and time ran out with the game tied at 57.

Forte drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner with 56.4 seconds left to tie it at 63 in the first overtime. The game went to a second overtime after McLemore air-balled a 3-pointer, Smart came up empty on a drive and Releford missed a driving attempt for Kansas. Smart's desperation shot from three-quarters court grazed the front of the rim.

"It was crazy," Releford said. "We knew it was going to be a tough match. With the crowd on their side and them being at home, we just knew we had to come out and just tough it out, and we did."

Politicians Cry Foul Over High Gas Prices, Urge Action on Keystone KL

Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., posted a "Keystone Clock " on his House Energy Committee's website Wednesday. The chairman states more than 1,615 days have passed since TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline proposal sought approval. Joining Upton's call to build the pipeline is Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio. Executives at TransCanada have tried a different tactic to try to get approval from the Obama administration by claiming the pipeline won't affect global warming.

The tug of war between economics and environmentalism is escalating thanks to 34 straight days of rising gasoline prices.

What does Upton say about President Barack Obama's lack of progress?

The energy committee chairman states on his clock, "The Keystone XL project offers a unique opportunity for the president to increase America's access to stable and secure oil supplies. Energy supply stability is an issue the American people become concerned about, especially when prices are rising."

Upton goes on to say the new pipeline will help "insulate" the United States from global competition for Middle Eastern oil supplies. He calls the huge project a "sensible solution" for America.

How does Boehner criticize Obama with gas prices rising?

Boehner posted a "Running on Empty " graphic Tuesday. The Speaker of the House complains gas prices have "soared $0.43 since Jan. 17" before remarking with his own Keystone clock, "How long will Americans have to wait?"

Boehner cites several sources, including nine Democratic senators, who want Obama to approve the project quickly. The pipeline may not see a decision until mid-June. Around 20,000 jobs and nearly a million barrels of oil a day are at stake for American oil companies.

What is the explanation for rising gas prices as argued by Upton and Boehner?

CNBC reports as many as eight refineries are closing on the East Coast. One such facility closed in January in New Jersey and prices have risen ever since. Crude oil refinement has decreased by 1 million barrels per day in 2013. The rise in gas prices threatens a fragile economic recovery trying to get ahead after the holiday season as investor John Kilduff says gas at $5 a gallon is a "real possibility."

What are some of the highest gas prices in the nation right now?

Prices for a regular gallon of gasoline average $3.75 nationally. Long Island Newsday reports one gallon goes for is above $4 just as higher payroll taxes and the expensive heating oil season kicks in. Gas prices are up more than 28 cents from a month ago in the region.

Gas prices in Michigan have risen 60 cents per gallon in the Detroit area, according to The Detroit News . Prices are expected to rise through April. Prices in Detroit are around $3.88 per gallon on average, a rise of 16 cents in the past week.

The Washington Post reports gas prices haven't risen this fast since 2005. Prices in the nation's capital are within five cents of $4 per gallon thanks in part to refineries, but also because of lower output in Saudi Arabia and tensions in Iraq and Iran.

What has TransCanada said about its proposal?

The oil company is trying a new tactic to please environmentalists, according to the Associated Press . Alex Pourbaix, one of the company's presidents, said Canada is responsible for just 2 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. The Oil Sands in Alberta, the area from where the oil will be transported, makes up just 5 percent of Canada's greenhouse gases. On the whole, Pourbaix argues the resulting one-tenth of 1 percent of global greenhouse emissions is "immaterial."

Can Acupuncture be Beneficial in Treating Seasonal Allergies?

Alternative therapies like acupuncture and Ayurveda usually goes unnoticed due to the lack of awareness on how effective it can be. But a new study conducted by Australian Medical Association may give a new direction to these practices, especially acupuncture

?

?

The research states that, ?acupuncture may be beneficial in treating seasonal allergy symptoms like runny noses and watery eyes, but the effect seems to be very small.?

?

According to a research conducted in the study of examining the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating seasonal allergies. The research found that 71 percent of people benefited after approximately eight weeks of acupuncture session, while 56 percent of allergy suffers who were treated with sham acupuncture as an alternative for comparison.

?

Dr. Harold Nelson ? Allergy Specialist at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado says ? ?Acupuncture works, but there a couple of warnings for people who think of using it.?

?

He further explains by stating an example,? Accupuncture is very persistent, if you are comparing it to spraying a nasal steroid in your nose once a morning. Acupuncture is more time consuming and effective only if it is practiced through a licensed and qualified acupuncturist.? ?

?

According to a research conducted by Dr. Benno Brinkhaus from Charite-University Medical Center in Berlin, Germany, he selected 422 allergy sufferers and assigned them to receive real acupuncture, sham acupuncture and only take antihistamines.?

?

After eight weeks and 12 treatment session, the allergy symptoms dropped drastically among people who received acupuncture treatment. Among people who received sham acupuncture their allergy symptoms dropped from 2.3 to 1.8 and people on medication their symptoms dropped from 2.5 to 2.2.?

?

However, by another eight weeks after treatment ended, there was no longer any difference in the degree of symptom improvement between groups.

?

Acupuncture treatment can just help to make a half-point change on the symptoms, plus it is also considered safe.

?

Researchers aren't sure why it might help people with seasonal allergies, other than its possible beneficial effect on the immune system.

?

At times, people find nasal steroids much more beneficial than other therapies, because they feel it helps in preventing symptoms. The results and views can vary from person to person and their body types. ?For people who are depended on medicines for years, acupuncture might be a great deal.?

?

Dr. Li-Xing Man ? Sinus Specialist at the University of Rochester Medical Center, New York says ? ?though it cannot be used as an alternative, it can be first used as some sort of complementary medicines. If the acupuncture has good results, it can reduce the anti-allergic medication.?
