Windows 8's Metro UI Isn't Very Good Without Touch, But It Doesn't Really Matter [Opinion]

Windows 8's new Metro UI is designed for tablets, but you'll get it on every Windows 8 PC. Five days into using Windows 8 nonstop, I've made up my mind: despite Microsoft's efforts, Metro really isn't that enjoyable to use with a mouse and a keyboard. Luckily, that's not going to stop Windows 8 from kicking butt, whether or not it's finger-friendly. Here's why.

It hasn't even been a week since Windows 8 was announced, and everyone's already up in arms about the new Metro interface. Sure, it looks like a pretty fantastic interface for a tablet, but if you don't have a touch screen, it seems like it doesn't belong. And those people are right, for the most part, but there's no reason to dig out the pitchforks and torches. The Metro UI isn't going to "ruin" your Windows 8 experience. It's just a new way of interacting with the OS, and if you'd rather never touch it with your mouse, you don't have to.

The Metro Interface Is Designed for Touch...

In Microsoft's keynote, they mentioned that the computing world is moving toward touch interfaces, and that may be true. They said that the Metro UI was designed to work with a mouse and a keyboard, but that it was so good that you'd wish you could touch your screen, even when on a regular desktop monitor. That should have been their first clue that it isn't a viable Start menu replacement.

Every time I boot into Windows 8, I want to reach over and touch my screen, simply because it's so awkward to use with a mouse. It's hard to even figure out how it works with a mouse. Should I click on the screen and drag it to swipe over? How the heck do I pinch to zoom? Even scrolling with the scroll wheel is awkward, since you're scrolling the mouse wheel up up and down to move the screen side to side. Not to mention that to click on an app, you have to move your mouse across the entire screen and actually do more scrolling than you had to do with the Windows 7 Start menu. Really, it's just inefficient, awkward, and frustrating, just like everyone's expecting it to be.

...But That Doesn't Really Matter...

However, once you bypass the Metro UI at startup and get into the traditional desktop (which you can do with a quick stroke of Win+M), none of that matters anymore. Sure, your Start menu's gone, but chances are most of you are using something like Executor, Launchy, or one of the many other great app launchers out there to start programs (and if you aren't, you should). Seriously ask yourself: Do you really use the Start menu all that much anymore, except maybe to shut down? Probably not. And if you do, you can easily replace it with one of the above launchers.

And, if you're addicted to the old Start menu search, all you need to do is re-learn the keyboard shortcut for search?now Win+ to search through files on your machine. Once you open them up, they'll just open up in their default app on the desktop. No need for the Start menu at all.

...And Metro's Still Good for a Few Things

The Metro UI may not be great as a Start menu, but I've found it still has a few neat applications on the desktop. Metro's informative tiles are pretty nice for keeping you up on emails, new tweets, the weather, upcoming calendar events, and so on?it actually makes a cool screensaver, of sorts. If you're getting up from your desk but staying nearby, you can just pop up the Metro UI and be able to see all that information from afar. Then, when you come back, just hit the Windows button and you're magically back on the desktop.

If you have dual monitors, you're also in a pretty cool position where Windows will automatically load Metro on one monitor and your desktop on the other monitor. You can always throw Metro up on one side, with all its informative tiles, when you aren't actively using both monitors (after all, why use a Metro-styled Rainmeter theme when you could just use Metro itself?).

Metro isn't without it's little annoyances, of course, and yes, I kind of wish Microsoft had more sanctioned options for turning it off. But it hardly destroys the Windows experience as so many people seem to be claiming (many of whom probably haven't even used it yet). You can easily keep it enabled without using it. And again, it's really easy to turn off entirely if you so desire. Once you get some of the new shortcuts in your muscle memory, you probably won't even notice that it's there. Turkey to freeze EU ties if Cyprus gets EU presidency

The comments could signal a new low point in ties between the European Union and Turkey which began accession talks to the bloc in 2005.

They come at a time of heightened tension in the eastern Mediterranean where Turkey is locked in a row with Cyprus over potential offshore gas deposits and Turkey's relations with one-time ally Israel are frayed.

"If the peace negotiations there (Cyprus) are not conclusive, and the EU gives its rotating presidency to southern Cyprus, the real crisis will be between Turkey and the EU," Anatolian quoted Atalay as telling Turkish Cypriot Bayrak Radio and TV at the end of a trip to northern Cyprus.

"Because we will then freeze our relations with the EU. We have made this announcement, as a government we have made this decision. Our relations with the EU will come to a sudden halt."

Officials at the European Commission in Brussels were not immediately available for comment.

The internationally-recognized Greek Cypriot government is due to take on the six-month rotating EU presidency in July 2012.

Cyprus has been divided since a Turkish invasion in 1974 triggered by a brief Greek-inspired coup. U.N.-sponsored peace talks between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots have stumbled since they were relaunched in 2008.

In July, Turkey's European Union minister said freezing ties with the Greek Cypriot EU presidency was "an option." While Muslim Turkey started accession talks in 2005, progress has been slow, largely because of the conflict with Cyprus.

The EU says Ankara must meet a pledge to open up traffic from the Greek Cypriot part of the island under a deal known as the Ankara protocol. Turkey says the EU should end its blockade of the Turkish Cypriot enclave.

"PROVOCATION"

Adding to tensions is an escalating row between Turkey and Cyprus over Greek Cypriot plans to launch gas explorations around the island.

Turkey has voiced strong opposition to the plans and on Saturday Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Cyprus' plans amounted to "provocation" and it would consider carrying out its own offshore surveys with northern Cyprus if drilling went ahead.

The Greek Cypriot government has said it would block Turkey's EU-entry talks if Ankara continued to oppose the plans. The United Nations has appealed for a peaceful resolution to the dispute, saying both sides of the island should benefit from any energy reserves.

The European Union, this month, told Turkey not to issue threats against Cyprus. Stoking tension in the eastern Mediterranean is a sharp deterioration in relations between Turkey and Israel following the 2010 killing of Turkish activists in an Israeli raid on a ship bound for Gaza.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said Turkish warships could be sent to the eastern Mediterranean at any time and Israel could not do whatever it wants there [nL5E7KF1LE].

Greek Cypriots represent Cyprus internationally and in the European Union, while Turkey is the only country to recognize the Turkish Cypriot state. Greek Cypriots say Turkey cannot join the bloc until the Cyprus conflict is resolved.

The rotating presidency has lost some importance since the EU's Lisbon treaty, which established a permanent head of the European Council that groups national governments, and a new foreign and security policy chief. But a determined country can still shape the agenda.

Of the 35 "chapters" -- policy areas of EU law -- Turkey has completed one, and 18 have been frozen because of opposition by EU member states including Cyprus and France.

Local Cancer Survivor to be Honored at Light The Night Walk ...

Lymphoma survivor, father and husband Garry Denk of Northbrook, 39, will be honored on Sunday, Sept. 25 at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s (LLS) annual Light The Night Walk at Gallery Park in Glenview. That night, Garry will walk along with thousands of other participants to honor survivors, remember loved ones and march in recognition of those still battling blood cancers.

Light The Night is LLS?s annual fundraising walk held in communities throughout the country to celebrate and commemorate lives, like Garry?s, that have been touched by cancer. More than 8,000 people in Illinois participate by forming teams with co-workers, families and friends to raise funds for life-saving blood cancer research and patient services.

Garry?s is one life saved. Last year, what he thought was a respiratory infection ended up, a few months later, as a diagnosis of Nodular Lymphocyte-Predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma. Garry?s six months of chemotherapy treatment began in July 2010, on his 38th birthday. After four months of treatment, his scans came back clean and Garry was able to enjoy Christmas with his family as a cancer-free man!

He says, ?I feel it is so important to support LLS and other groups so that everyone who is diagnosed with cancer will have the same opportunities and success as me.? For the second year, Garry will walk with friends and family to support those fighting blood cancers. Last year the team walked as Garry Will Win! and this year, in celebration of their survivor?s victory over cancer, the team will walk as ?Garry Won!

?We are so appreciative to Garry and his family for being willing to share the experience of lymphoma,? says LLS executive director Pam Swenk. ?As hard as it is to tell the story, it helps people understand how important Light The Night is, and what a difference The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society makes. Without the commitment of each and every walker that comes out and carries a balloon to symbolize our mission, and the dollars raised, we would not be able to invest in the research that is changing the quality of life for people living with cancer.?

The Light The Night Walk is a two-mile, non-competitive event. Participants carry illuminated balloons while they walk ? white for survivors, red for supporters and gold to remember those we have lost to blood cancer. Pre-Walk festivities include music, food, entertainment, and kids activities, beginning at 5:30 p.m. A brief program will recognize Honored Heroes like Garry, before the Walk itself starts at 7 p.m.

In addition to Glenview, other area locations for the Light The Night Walk include Chicago (Grant Park), Lisle and Rockford. The Walk is held in September in recognition of Leukemia, Lymphoma & Myeloma Awareness Month.
