SOFIA, Bulgaria - The president of Bulgaria's soccer union says Lothar Matthaeus has been fired as national coach.

Borislav Mihailov says that despite an agreement to extend the contract of the German soccer great through World Cup qualifying, the soccer union has changed its mind after losses to England and Switzerland in European Championship qualifying.

Under-21 coach Mihail Madanski has been appointed acting coach and will lead the team in the next Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales next month.

Bulgaria failed to qualify for Euro 2012. The team has only five points from seven games in Group G.
