Global 'Happiness Index' Ranks Canada 23rd

An annual "happiness barometer" ranks Canada the 23rd happiest nation out of 58 in the lead-up to the new year.

Leger Marketing surveyed nearly 53,000 people in 58 countries, asking participants to state whether they perceived themselves as "happy" or "unhappy" in 2011.

Fiji was the happiest, according to the Global Barometer of Happiness. And, in a surprise to the pollsters, Afghanistan recorded higher happiness numbers than the United States.

About 60 per cent of the 1,003 Canadians who responded described themselves as happy, and 13 per cent said they were feeling down.

A large proportion ? about 26 per cent ? of the Canadians surveyed couldn't say how they felt, said David Scholz, executive vice-president of Leger Marketing in Toronto.

That Canada didn't rank among the top five happiest countries may surprise some people, but Scholz said the results may have something to do with how much Canadians want out of their lives.

Expect 'spectacular' happiness

"I think in Canada, we have a lot of high expectations," he said. "We expect happiness to be something spectacular.

"But what we define as 'happiness' is very different from what others around the world define as happiness. It's a bit of 'What are you used to, and what are you expecting?' We want more."

The survey assigned each country a "net happiness" score, calculated by subtracting the percentage of unhappy respondents from the percentage of happy ones.

Differences in cultural perspectives about happiness yielded some unexpected results for the pollsters.

Canada's net happiness score of 47 per cent, for example, tied with Japan's ? a nation that was crippled this year by a series of deadly disasters, including an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis.

Afghanistan, which had a net happiness score of 35 per cent, beat the United States, at 33 per cent.

"That was one [result] that stood out for us as the most impressive result," Scholz said. "And it's only by a few points, but people in Afghanistan are happier than people in the United States right now. And a big part of it is what's changed in Afghanistan."

An overall positive outlook in the war-scarred Islamic republic might reflect the de-escalation of aggression and violence there.

Fiji ranked happiest country

"In the United States, not much has changed over the past year or little while," Scholz said. "And yes, the troops are coming home and that?s positive. But the de-escalation of the Afghanistan conflict doesn?t affect the U.S. the way it does Afghanistan."

While Canada may not be home to the happiest people ? that honour goes to the residents of the South Pacific island of Fiji, who scored an 85 per cent on "net happiness" ? Canadians still consider themselves to be part of a "happy nation," the survey suggests.

Particularly those living in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

"The happiest place in Canada would be the Prairies," Scholz said, suggesting the return of the Winnipeg Jets and some unseasonably warm weather helped to buoy spirits in 2011. "Look at the year they've had. It's been a very positive year."

Alberta least happy place in Canada

As for the unhappiest place in Canada, Scholz points to Alberta.

Although he said Alberta has low unemployment and crime rates, he speculated that feelings of dissatisfaction there may have to do with expectations. Albertans have apparently set theirs high.

"Do you want more? A big part of wanting more is when Alberta wants to grow and grow and grow," Scholz said.

Rounding out the top five countries for happiness, aside from Fiji, are Nigeria (84 per cent net happiness), the Netherlands (77 per cent), Switzerland (76 per cent) and Ghana (72 per cent).

The least happy place in the world, according to the survey, is Romania, which scored a negative 10 per cent on the net happiness chart.

Despite Canada's so-so spot on the happiness scale, Scholz said there's much to be grateful for, with the country enjoying a relatively stable economy compared to other places.

"We've seen what's happened in the U.S., so hope for an economic prosperity is diminished," he said. "We see next year as a tough year, but we're still going into it with a smile on our face."

The Global Barometer of Happiness study has been conducted annually since 1977 and has a margin of error of plus or minus three to five per cent. People were surveyed face-to-face and over the phone.

Banks Face Off For Facebook IPO

This year has been lackluster for Wall Street bankers. But next year, there's Facebook Inc.

Up for grabs is the lead investment-banking role in the social-networking site's initial public offering, and long-time rivals Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley are considered front-runners, bankers and venture capitalists say.

Associated Press

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The firm expects to sell stock in 2012.

The Menlo Park, Calif., company plans to file its offering documents in early 2012, a person familiar with the matter has said, meaning that a decision on bankers could be soon. Some bankers have been waiting by the phone over the holidays for the call that they will be participating in the company's IPO in some way, another person said.

As they gear up for the offering, Facebook executives have held a new round of meetings since Thanksgiving with Wall Street firms, according to people familiar with the situation.

The deal will be one of the most hotly contested offerings of the decade, with hundreds of millions of dollars in potential fees and bragging rights on the line.

Facebook's stock sale could be as big as $10 billion, valuing the company at $100 billion or more. Fees for IPOs of that size have averaged 2.2%, according to Dealogic, which tracks new issues. That would mean a possible total payoff of as much as $220 million, though the company could negotiate lower fees because the Facebook deal is such a trophy.

Goldman and Morgan face stiff competition from rival investment banks vying for the prize of becoming the lead manager. Still, both are seen as having a leg up on competitors, even though each has possible knocks against them.

Goldman orchestrated a $1.5 billion private offering of Facebook shares in January, indicating a value for the company of $50 billion. Morgan Stanley is the leading bank for Internet IPOs this year, both in the U.S. and world-wide.

Goldman was seen initially as a shoo-in for leading the offering. But the New York company has had to prove itself anew to Facebook in the wake of a flub 11 months ago. Goldman had to restructure a private-placement deal that nearly ran afoul of U.S. securities laws that restrict advertising of private placements. Goldman solved the problem by limiting the offering to non-U.S. investors, but executives at the social-networking company became less enamored with the bank, according to people familiar with the matter.

Goldman Chairman and Chief Executive Lloyd C. Blankfein went to woo at least one Facebook board member earlier this fall, according to people familiar with the matter.

Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley recently held the coveted "lead left" role in the IPO of games site Zynga Inc. The "lead left" bank sees its name in the top left spot on the front page of the IPO prospectus. This "lead of the leads" status imbues the bank with the most authority on a deal, but also subjects that firm to the most criticism if things go awry in an offering.

Zynga shares have mostly traded below their offering price since the IPO, which some bankers have said could hurt Morgan Stanley's chances in winning the Facebook deal.

Goldman and Morgan Stanley are running neck-and-neck for the title of No. 1 in underwriting the most U.S.-listed IPOs for 2011, according to Dealogic.

Representatives for Goldman, Morgan Stanley and Facebook declined to comment.

The prize role on Facebook could put the winner ahead of competitors in an area that has proven to be one of Wall Street's bright spots amid relentless pressure on profits.

Bankers who advise corporations on mergers and financing have regained some dominance within their Wall Street firms this year as trading businesses suffered. Traders have been hurt by jittery investors and new rules intended to curb risk-taking with a firm's own capital. The Facebook deal could give the winning bankers even more power.

At Goldman, fixed-income trading revenue fell 37% in the first nine months of 2011 compared to a year earlier, while investment-banking revenue rose 6%. Morgan Stanley has been trying to expand its nontrading businesses, particularly its wealth-management business.

Even if Goldman loses top billing in the Facebook deal, it will still win. The reason: If Facebook is valued at $100 billion, Goldman would double the value of its own stake in the company, giving it an instant $375 million profit.

As part of Goldman's fund raising of $1.5 billion for Facebook in January, the securities firm bought what was then slightly less than 1% of the social-network company for $375 million. Goldman has a history of investing its own money alongside that of clients.

In addition, Goldman will make nearly another $100 million on fees that clients paid the firm to invest in Facebook through a private fund in January. On about $1 billion invested in the Facebook fund by Goldman's non-U.S. clients, Goldman charged a 0.5% fee on any capital investors committed for expenses, a 4% placement fee plus a 5% fee on any gains in the fund if investors cash out.

If Facebook goes public with a stock-market value of $100 billion, that would add up to about $95 million in fees, depending on whether investors cash out after the IPO.

3 NATO troops killed by bomb in east Afghanistan

Three NATO service members have been killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan, the alliance said Wednesday.

A statement said the deaths occurred Tuesday, but provided no further details about the incident or the nationalities of the troops.

The latest deaths bring December's toll of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan to 23, for a total of 539 deaths so far this year.

The yearly tally is considerably lower than for 2010, when more than 700 troops died. The number of wounded remained high, dipping only slightly from last year's total of more than 5,000 service members.

M-Edge suit accuses Amazon of corporate bullying, patent infringement over Kindle cases

Case maker M-Edge filed suit with a Maryland court last week accusing Amazon of "unlawful corporate bullying" and patent infringement relating to the company's line of Kindle cases. According to M-Edge, the company signed a three-year agreement with Amazon in November 2009 for a 15-percent sales commission, only to have the retail giant demand a new contract with a 32-percent cut a mere two month later. A lawyer for M-Edge told The Wall Street Journal that Amazon punished the case maker over its refusal to play ball, after threats of burying the company's products on its site. According to the filing, M-Edge finally caved and signed a new contract in July of last year, given the fact that Amazon apparently drives nearly 90-percent of the small company's revenue. The suit also accuses Amazon of "knocking off" its reading light-packing covers with lighted jacket designs for the Kindle 3. Amazon, for its part, has refused to comment on the matter.

State cuts to Medicaid affect patients, providers

(AP) ? Just as Medicaid prepares for a vast expansion under the federal health care overhaul, the 47-year-old entitlement program for the poor is under increasing pressure as deficit-burdened states chip away at benefits and cut payments to doctors.

Nearly every state has proposed or implemented a plan in its current budget to rein in costs, and many are considering additional cuts in the year ahead.

For the tens of millions of poor and disabled who rely on the program ? approaching nearly one in five Americans ? the cuts translate into longer waits for doctors, restrictions on prescription drugs, a halt to vision and dental care, staff cuts at nursing homes and dwindling access to home health care.

Ruth Wohlforth, 70, is among those feeling the effects.

Her $700 monthly income qualifies her for both Medicare and Medicaid, but she says her benefits have been reduced, she's being forced her to make co-pays for the first time on prescription drugs, and she now has to drive about 30 minutes from her home near the southern tip of New Jersey to see a doctor. Some of her friends have been assigned to doctors in Philadelphia.

She said she feels lawmakers are not aware of the real-world consequences of their spending cuts.

"I've seen so many people in tears, and they don't know what to do," Wohlforth said. "People that are older than I am, and are in worse shape, they get befuddled by the whole thing. They don't know where to go for help; they just feel they're not being listened to."

States are reshaping the Medicaid landscape even as the need has grown along with joblessness during the recession.

The $427 billion-a-year program, a combination of state and federal funding, also had been targeted for additional cuts at the federal level this year as members of Congress sparred over how to reduce the nation's debt. But funding seems safe for now after a special committee failed last month to reach an agreement on how to cut overall spending.

Already, many changes at the state level have been dramatic and are testing the legal bounds of what Medicaid must provide:

? Arizona, for a time, eliminated life-saving transplants for Medicaid patients, and hospital officials in the state blame at least one death on the halt in coverage. Gov. Jan Brewer restored transplants but is prohibiting thousands of low-income, childless adults from entering the program and has added fees on those who smoke and the obese.

? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is pushing a plan under which only the poorest would qualify. A parent of two making more than $103 per week would no longer be eligible for coverage.

? The U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether California has the right to continue cutting payments to physicians and other Medicaid providers to help close the state's ongoing budget deficit.

Cuts to provider fees, as in California, have been the most frequently used tactic by states to save Medicaid costs. A recent survey by the National Association of State Budget Officers found that 33 states wanted to reduce provider rates and another 16 sought to freeze them.

California was granted permission by federal officials to make broad cuts to reimbursement rates to its Medicaid program, known as Medi-Cal, in October. The cuts include a 10 percent reduction to payments for outpatient services for doctors, clinics, optometrists, dental services, medical equipment and pharmacy. They are intended to save the state an estimated $623 million.

A coalition of trade associations representing doctors, pharmacists and chain drug stores has filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the cuts. Doctors who care for Medi-Cal patients say they already have been subjected to multiple pay cuts, and some say they no longer will be able to serve the state's neediest patients.

About 70 percent of Dr. Douglas Tolley's practice in Yuba County is covered by Medi-Cal. The 64-year-old obstetrician, who practices in a largely agricultural region about 40 minutes north of the state capital, said he is the old-school sort of doctor who "was brought up in a time when doctors took care of all comers."

Yet he has seen his income steadily drop over the last 18 years ? down one-third from what it was when he started.

"Everybody understands that doctors are basically small business people, and we have to meet our cost plus make a living." Tolley said. "Just meeting our cost doesn't mean staying in business."

Even more state cuts could be on the horizon. In Maine, Gov. Paul LePage recently proposed removing 65,000 residents from the program, citing a state Medicaid shortfall estimated to reach $221 million through mid-2013. The Republican governor says he will not consider tax increases to make up the difference.

State officials, who are required to balance their budgets, argue they have no choice but to cut into Medicaid after four straight years of budget deficits. With state and federal funds combined, Medicaid makes up 22 percent of total state spending, the largest single portion of most state budgets, according to the National Association of State Budget Officers.

Critics say the moves are shortsighted.

Joan Alker, co-executive director of the Center for Children and Families at Georgetown University, said slashing Medicaid will not stop the sick from seeking care, sending them to emergency rooms and ultimately inflating private medical insurance premiums.

"At the end of the day, for the children, the individuals with disabilities, the seniors in nursing homes, their health care needs are not going to go away just because someone cuts the Medicaid program," Alker said.

Jerry Kemmer, a former Democratic state assemblyman in New York, said Medicaid has long been an issue lawmakers did not want to touch. Now, they simply have no choice.

"It's ballooned to the extent that it's just become a budget-buster," he said.

Six million people have joined the Medicaid rolls since the recession began in late 2007. Enrollment nationally topped 50 million for the first time in June 2010, a number that is projected to keep rising, especially as the nation's unemployment rate remains high.

Billions of dollars from the federal stimulus program helped avoid deep Medicaid cuts through the worst of the recession, but the last of that money dried up this year.

In Florida, Medicaid reimbursement rates were reduced this year by 12 percent for most hospitals, although rural and children's hospitals were cut just 3 percent, and rates for nursing homes were cut 6.5 percent.

But the start of the next legislative session in January already has some people worried about additional cuts.

Debra St. Fleur, 25, of Miami, is covered by Medicaid, along with her 1-year-old son. Many of her neighbors in the city's Little Haiti section are on Medicaid, too, and she worries what would happen if services continue to be eroded.

"It's really scary," she said. "If they can't get their medicine, what's going to happen? They're going to die."

The Obama administration is concerned enough about the widespread Medicaid provider cuts that it has introduced a rule that would make it harder for states to slash the rates. The move is designed to ensure that those eligible for Medicaid are not denied access due to a shortage of health care resources.

Medicaid reimbursement rates already trail those physicians receive for treating Medicare patients and those with private insurance. A study by the nonpartisan Center for Studying Health System Change found that on, average, Medicaid would reimburse a doctor $39 for 45 minutes for a new patient hospital visit, compared to $63 for Medicare.

Physician groups say that has left more and more doctors declining to see Medicaid clients. Some providers are trying to find other ways to make up for the cuts.

In Columbia, S.C., Julie Ann Avin, executive director of the private, nonprofit Mental Illness Recovery Center Inc., has decided not to fill staff vacancies and also cut back on some rehab services because of Medicaid's new authorization process. The center serves about 650 people annually, close to 60 percent of whom are on Medicaid.

"We accept folks regardless," Avin said. "Everything that we do is not based just on a reimbursement."

Molly Collins Offner, director of policy development for the American Hospital Association, said emergency rooms must accept Medicaid clients, as well as those without insurance.

"More and more, you are seeing ER's becoming primary care docs," she said.

She said deep cuts rippling through the Medicaid system will only exacerbate that.

A report from 9to5Mac said tech giant Apple, Inc. will release the much anticipated iPad 3 on Feb. 25 to honor Steve Jobs' birthday.

According to 9to5Mac's report, Apple usually unveils its products on press conferences scheduled on a Tuesday or a Wednesday and makes it available on a Friday or a Saturday. Feb. 24 is a Friday, if Apple will stick to its schedule, the iPad 3 will hit the stores on Steve's birthday but will be unveiled earlier that month.

Earlier this year, iPad 2 was unveiled on March 2 in a media event; however, it hit the stores on March 11. During those times, Jobs' was on medical leave but returned to show off the new tablet saying, "We've been working on this product for a while and I didn't want to miss today."

Like us on Facebook

The first generation of iPad was unveiled on a Wednesday, Jan.27, but hit the stores on a Saturday, April 3.

As expected from Apple, the company is still mum about the next generation of the tablet and many are waiting for the invites from the Cupertino-based company. Whenever the release of the new gadget will be, we will see a lot of rumors surrounding the iPad in the coming weeks. We have seen reports about the early 2012 release, revamped iPad, display shipments, a March launch with a smaller dock, and a cheaper, smaller iPad.

According to the Taiwanese news agency DigiTimes, tech giant Apple, Inc. will be releasing its much-awaited next generation of iPad in the next three to four months.

DigiTimes reported that their sources from the Apple's supply chain said that the production for the iPad 3 ramped up and the production of current generation of iPad decreased. Specifically, the source of the news agency confirmed that OEM production of the iPad 2 will remain high, producing 14 to 15 million units by the fourth quarter of 2011 but will drastically decline to 4 to 5 million units on the first quarter of 2012 to pave the way for the new iPad.

The production of the new iPad 3 is expected to reach up to 9.5 to 9.8 million units in the first quarter of 2012. The new iPad will be equipped with Retina Display and is expected to have its launch on March or April based on Apple's yearly product cycle. Looking back the first iPad went on sale in the United States on April 3, 2010. The iPad 2 became available on March 11, 2011.

Maine police chief: Someone took missing toddler (AP)

WATERVILLE, Maine ? A 20-month-old girl who vanished a week before Christmas after being put to bed in her father's home was taken away and didn't walk out on her own, investigators said Monday as they announced the largest reward ever offered in the state to help find a missing person.

It marked the first time since the search for Ayla Reynolds began that police have directly said they don't believe she left the house by herself.

"At this point in the investigation ... we are confident that Ayla did not walk out of the house by herself," Waterville police Chief Joseph Massey said at a news conference at which he announced a $30,000 reward was being offered for help finding her. "We believe that someone was involved in taking her out of the house, and that's where the focus of this investigation has turned."

The reward, gathered with donations from residents and businesses in the Waterville area, is the biggest ever offered in Maine for a missing person, state Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said.

Massey said the developments in a mystery that's been featured on national television programs have not shifted the matter from a missing-person case to a criminal investigation. Despite the passing of the Christmas holiday with no sign of Ayla, police remain committed to finding her, the chief said.

"The intensity of the investigation is as high today as it was the first day," he said. "We continue to employ every single resource we have."

Massey was joined at the news conference by Waterville attorney John Nale, who appealed for the safe return of Ayla.

"I ask and I plead with the person or persons who have Ayla Reynolds that they please keep her safe and return her safely to us," Nale said.

Hundreds of police officers, game wardens and local residents have been searching for Ayla since she was reported missing by her father, Justin DiPietro, on the morning of Dec. 17. Massey said a report about the case on the Fox network television program "America's Most Wanted" during the weekend generated some leads, which are being checked by police.

DiPietro told investigators he last saw Ayla when he put her to bed the night before at his home in Waterville, a city of 16,000 residents about 20 miles north of the state capital, Augusta. He said she was wearing polka dot pajamas with the words "Daddy's Princess" on them and had a cast on her broken left arm.

Ayla ended up with her father after child welfare workers intervened while her mother, Trista Reynolds, checked herself into a 10-day rehabilitation program.

Reynolds, who completed the rehab, had filed court papers that she said she hoped would lead to the return of her daughter. The filing came the day before Ayla was last seen.

DiPietro has said he has "no idea what happened to Ayla or who is responsible." He said last week his family and friends would do "everything we can to assist in this investigation and get Ayla back home."

(AP) ? Wailing and sobbing mourners beat their chests and dropped to their knees as North Korean President Kim Il Sung's hearse, draped with a red flag and bedecked with white magnolias, crawled through the streets of Pyongyang in 1994.

But even as they cried out on a hot summer's day for the leader they called "Father," they began pledging their loyalty to his son, leader-in-waiting Kim Jong Il, who cut a solemn and somber figure in a dark blue suit, a black band wrapped around his left arm.

Same setting, different season: Similar shows of grief are expected when North Korea lays Kim Jong Il to rest in a winter chill during two days of funeral ceremonies on Wednesday and Thursday. As in 1994, the events will be watched closely for clues to who will gain power and who will fall out of favor under the next leader, his son Kim Jong Un.

---

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jean H. Lee, the Associated Press bureau chief for Korea, has made 11 trips to North Korea since 2008, including eight visits this year.

---

This state funeral, however, is also likely to bear the hallmarks of Kim Jong Il's rule, including more of a military presence for the man who elevated the armed forces as part of his "songun," or "military first," policy.

Kim, who has been lying in state since he died Dec. 17, celebrated major occasions with lavish, meticulously choreographed parades designed to show off the nation's military might, such as the October 2010 display when he introduced his son and anointed successor to the world.

"A display of weapons may also be a way to demonstrate that the military remains loyal to the succession process," said Ahn Chan-il of the World Institute for North Korea Studies in South Korea. "There may even be a small-scale military parade involving airplanes."

Like his father was in 1994, Kim Jong Un has appeared stoic in a dark blue Mao-style suit in appearances at Kim Jong Il's bier ? but so far without the black armband that Kim Jong Il wore at the funeral to mark him as head mourner.

Kim Jong Un would have been a boy when his grandfather died, and there's no sign of the young Kim in footage of the 1994 funeral. But it's clear from footage of him during the mourning period for his father that he is well-schooled in the behavior expected as heir to the nation's leader.

The 1994 funeral is likely to be the template for this week's events.

At the time, details about the funeral in a country largely isolated from the West were shrouded in mystery, revealed only after state TV aired segments of the events in what was the world's best glimpse of the hidden communist nation.

Most foreigners aside from those living in North Korea were shut out, and the same is expected this week, though Rev. Moon Hyung-jin, an American citizen and son of Seoul-based Unification Church founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon, is planning to attend Wednesday's funeral, according to church officials. The Moon family has business ties with the North.

In 1994, the formation of the funeral committee was examined closely for signs of who was expected to rise in power in the post-Kim Il Sung era; observers likewise dissected the 232 names on last week's list.

When Kim Il Sung died, it was unclear whether North Korea would hew to traditional Korean mourning rites or follow rituals seen elsewhere in the communist world.

According to the official account, what appeared to the world as North Korean ritual was a highly personal response by Kim Jong Il, who is credited by his official biography with choreographing every detail of his father's funeral.

The biography says it was the son who proposed turning the massive assembly hall where his father worked for 20 years into a public place of mourning ? and then, a year later, into a permanent shrine where Kim Il Sung's embalmed body still lies.

Kim Jong Il's biography also gives him credit for breaking tradition by picking a smiling image of the late president taken in 1986 instead of the somber image typical for Korean funerals.

To this day, the portraits that hang in every building and on the lapels of nearly all North Koreans show a smiling Kim Il Sung. And since Kim Jong Il died, pictures erected at mourning sites across the nation show him beaming as well.

The official biography says Kim Jong Il picked one of his father's neckties for the body and ordered the portrait bedecked with magnolias, the national flower, not traditional black ribbon.

After the closed-door funeral, Kim was seen in the footage leaving the hall and standing on a dais sheathed in red, surveying the scene alongside top party and military officials as the black Lincoln Continental bearing his father's body departs the palace grounds to a military salute.

A car with the massive portrait ringed with white magnolias led the motorcade, followed by the hearse bearing the president's body, and then a phalanx of police in white helmets riding on motorcycles in a "V'' formation.

Kim Jong Il and other members of the funeral committee followed slowly in sedans. Soldiers in jeeps flanked the procession.

North Koreans lined the streets and filled the air with theatrical wails, many of the women in traditional black dresses and with white mourning ribbons affixed to their hair.

The procession reached the central square that bears Kim Il Sung's name, where hundreds of thousands of mourners were waiting. The hearse circled the square before returning to the assembly hall for a gun salute.

A similar procession may be in the works for Wednesday, but with the late leader's trademark red "kimjongilia" begonias replacing the magnolias, and snow and frost as a backdrop.

State media said a national memorial service for Kim Jong Il would start midday Thursday and include an artillery salute, three minutes of silence and locomotives and vessels blowing their sirens.

Footage Tuesday from Associated Press Television News in Pyongyang showed long lines of people carrying wreaths and bunches of white flowers toward a building with a huge picture of a smiling Kim Jong Il on its facade. They piled flowers beneath the photo, bowing and crying as they stood in the cold. Some pledged their loyalty to Kim Jong Un. Light traffic flowed through Pyongyang's streets, people drinking hot tea at makeshift tents set up on the sidewalks.

The funeral for Kim Jong Il, who made it state policy to revere his father as North Korea's "eternal" president, will likely be similar to Kim Il Sung's but probably not outdo it, said Prof. Jeong Jin-gook of the Daejeon Health Sciences College in South Korea.

"Kim Il Sung still remains the most respected among North Koreans," he said.

Kim Jong Il may have put his personal stamp on his father's funeral, but so far Kim Jong Un is sticking to tradition. From the blue suit to the solemn bows before the begonia-bedecked bier, the young leader-in-waiting has closely followed his father's cues.

Still, he is credited with one directive that seems likely fodder for his official biography: According to state media, he instructed the city to keep mourners lined up in subzero temperatures warm with hot water and tea.

Macy's, Wal-Mart among holiday retail winners

Macy's Inc, Wal-Mart and others continue to get high marks from Wall Street as the busy season draws to a close, while Sears Holdings Corp proved that it was really not a jolly holiday for all stores.

Sears said it would close dozens of Sears and Kmart stores after seeing sales at its existing locations drop 5.2 percent from the beginning of the quarter through Christmas. Its shares plunged 21 percent on Tuesday.

The announcement comes two weeks after Best Buy Co Inc said that offering bigger discounts to kick-start the holiday season ate into its profits.

Retailers with the right mix of controlled discounts this season included Macy's and Wal-Mart Stores Inc, analysts said.

"I see Macy's as the market-share winner," said independent retail analyst Brian Sozzi, who said shoppers did not see "slash-and-burn discounting" at the department store chain.

"They are the destination place among department stores," he said.

Walmart's return to layaway helped the world's largest retailer and pressured others. Layaway sales, where items are put aside for customers until they fully pay for them, fell at Kmart, while Target Corp saw sales of toys crimped by Walmart's layaway push even before Thanksgiving.

Retailers are expected to ring up $469.1 billion in holiday season sales, or a rise of 3.8 percent from 2010, according to the National Retail Federation.

Meanwhile, U.S. consumer confidence rose to an eight-month high in December, the Conference Board said, suggesting that Americans have a brighter take on the economy heading into 2012.

The S&P retail index was flat on Tuesday, roughly in line with the broader S&P 500 index.

In general, analysts said that retailers did a good job of having the right level of inventory in place, which meant there was not a need for major panicked discounting.

In some cases, there were even items out of stock, such as certain watches and men's dress shirts in Macy's, said Sozzi.

But it appeared that few retailers predicted just how mild the weather would be so far in most parts of the country, leading to a glut of warm coats, sweaters and other items.

That could put pressure on companies such as winter outerwear makers VF Corp, which makes The North Face line, and Columbia Sportswear Co, said Craig Johnson, president of Customer Growth Partners.

"While the economic tone seems a bit better, the lower-end consumer is still most constrained and thus we think investors are still best positioned in those companies targeting higher-end consumers," such as Tiffany & Co, True Religion Apparel Inc and Nordstrom Inc, said Caris & Company analyst Dorothy Lakner.

Lakner's favorite small and mid-cap stocks are Zumiez Inc and American Eagle Outfitters Inc, "where specific strategies set them apart from their competition," she said.

Among chains catering to teens, American Eagle appeared to have "better traffic consistently" throughout the season, while Abercrombie & Fitch Co kept its prices too high, even with discounts, said Sozzi.

American Eagle's success has come at the expense of the higher priced Abercrombie, which got hammered," said Johnson.

Another teen player, Aeropostale Inc, struggled without fresh fashion and lost out to competitors such as Forever 21, H&M and Fast Retailing's Uniqlo, he said.

Lakner also called out Children's Place Retail Stores Inc as one of retail's "best turnaround stories."

Muslim sect claims Nigeria church attacks; 25 dead (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? An explosion ripped through a Catholic church during Christmas Mass near Nigeria's capital Sunday, killing at least 25 people, officials said. A radical Muslim sect claimed the attack and another bombing near a church in the restive city of Jos, as explosions also struck the nation's northeast.

The Christmas Day attacks show the growing national ambition of the sect known as Boko Haram, which is responsible for at least 491 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. The assaults come a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded.

The first explosion on Sunday struck St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, a town in Niger state close to the capital, Abuja, authorities said. Rescue workers recovered at least 25 bodies from the church and officials continued to tally those wounded in various hospitals, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency.

His agency already has acknowledged it didn't have enough ambulances immediately on hand to help the wounded. Luguard also said an angry crowd that gathered at the blast site hampered rescue efforts as they refused to allow workers inside.

"We're trying to calm the situation," Luguard said. "There are some angry people around trying to cause problems."

In Jos, a second explosion struck near a Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church, government spokesman Pam Ayuba said. Ayuba said gunmen later opened fire on police guarding the area, killing one police officer. Two other locally made explosives were found in a nearby building and disarmed, he said.

"The military are here on ground and have taken control over the entire place," Ayuba said.

The city of Jos is located on the dividing line between Nigeria's predominantly Christian south and Muslim north. Thousands have died in communal clashes there over the last decade.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's capital of Abuja had issued a warning Friday to citizens to be "particularly vigilant" around churches, large crowds and areas where foreigners congregate.

Several days of fighting in and around the northeastern city of Damaturu between the sect and security forces already had killed at least 61 people, authorities said.

On Sunday, local police commissioner Tanko Lawan said two explosions had struck Damaturu, including a suicide car bombing. Lawan said that blast happened around noon, targeting the headquarters of Nigeria's secret police in the area. There was no immediate information about casualties, he said.

In the last year, Boko Haram has carried out increasingly bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, a nation of more than 160 million people.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a Nov. 4 attack on Damaturu, Yobe state's capital, that killed more than 100 people. The group also claimed the Aug. 24 suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria's capital that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

The sect came to national prominence in 2009, when its members rioted and burned police stations near its base of Maiduguri, a dusty northeastern city on the cusp of the Sahara Desert. Nigeria's military violently put down the attack, crushing the sect's mosque into shards as its leader was arrested and died in police custody. About 700 people died during the violence.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties.

Boko Haram has splintered into three factions, with one wing increasingly willing to kill as it maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia, diplomats and security sources say.

Sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and nearby Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

ESPN analyst: Tigers' rotation seventh-best in baseball

Doug Fister gave the Tigers' rotation a big boost after being acquired at the trade deadline last summer.

Now Fister has the Tigers' rotation ranked among the best in the game, according to an ESPN analyst.

Buster Olney broke down the top rotations in baseball Monday, and had the Tigers seventh.

Of Detroit's staff, Olney wrote:

"Justin Verlander is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and Most Valuable Player, yet he didn't even post the best ERA on his own team in the second half of the season. That belonged to Doug Fister, who thrived with Detroit after a midseason trade from Seattle; he had a 2.47 ERA after the All-Star break. Max Scherzer was better than his ERA indicated ? his bad starts were awful, and he had a lot of great starts ? and like Derek Holland, Rick Porcello appeared to learn some stuff about himself in the postseason; remember, Porcello doesn't turn 23 until Tuesday."

The Tigers' rotation was the only one in the AL Central ranked in Olney's top 11.

Here was his order: 1. Phillies, 2. Rays, 3. Angels, 4. Giants, 5. Diamondbacks, 6. Rangers, 7. Tigers, 8. Nationals, 9. Mariners, 10a. Braves, 10b. Dodgers.
