Mayor Jim Watson is taking a downtown casino off the table after facing a challenge from a councillor determined to reopen the gaming issue.

Watson announced Monday he?s recommending that the Rideau Carleton Raceway be the ?only acceptable location? for a gaming house in Ottawa.

Up until now, Watson has advocated for a casino plus a ?satellite? gaming operation at the racetrack.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. indicated it wasn?t going to happen.

Now Watson is expressing disappointment that the OLG is treating the slots at the Woodbine racetrack differently because it?s in a separate gaming zone from the rest of Toronto.

?It was becoming increasingly clear that there would be no future role for the (Rideau Carleton Raceway) given the OLG?s most recent position,? Watson wrote to council late Monday afternoon.

?Therefore, I do not believe we should jeopardize the Rideau Carleton Raceway operation by not being crystal clear to the OLG prior to the start of its RFP process.?

Watson hopes to have a motion considered by council in July.

Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Tim Tierney had indicated he would ask council to reopen the casino debate later this month.

Support has been growing around City Hall for his move.

More to come.
