Man City misses chance to pressure Man United

LONDON (AP) -Manchester City missed the chance to put pressure on Premier League leader Manchester United on Saturday when it stumbled to a 3-3 draw against Sunderland that ended its record winning streak.

With United not in action until Monday, City knew that it could have drawn level on points with the defending champions with a Premier League-record 21st straight home win.

Instead, City needed two goals in the last six minutes to salvage a draw.

Sebastian Larsson scored either side of a goal from Nicklas Bendtner to give Sunderland a 3-1 lead before Mario Balotelli hit his second goal of the game for City and Aleksandar Kolarov equalized in the 86th minute.

Third-place Arsenal lost 2-1 at Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea scored twice in the last six minutes to win 4-2 at Aston Villa. Fernando Torres scored his first Premier League goal in six months as Chelsea kept up its challenge for a top-four finish.

City's second straight draw means United could go five points clear with seven games remaining if it beats Blackburn on Monday. City rallied for last weekend's 1-1 draw at Stoke and needed an even bigger comeback against Sunderland, which beat City 1-0 in January.

Larsson scored with a low shot into the corner from the edge of the area in the 31st and, although Balotelli leveled with a contentious penalty awarded for Craig Gardner's challenge on Edin Dzeko, City trailed at halftime for the first time this season after Bendtner headed in Stephane Sessegnon's cross.

Larsson made it 3-1 with a far-post finish from Bendtner's cross and City's frustrations showed as Balotelli and substitute Carlos Tevez apparently argued over who would take a free kick. Kolarov eventually took it.

But Balotelli reduced the deficit with a long-range shot and Kolarov smashed in an equalizer from substitute David Pizarro's set up.

City has 71 points to United's 73. Arsenal has 58 after former Tottenham midfielder Adel Taarabt, with his first Premier League goal, and Samba Diakite scored for QPR. Theo Walcott got Arsenal's reply.

With captain Stiliyan Petrov watching from the stands following his diagnosis with leukemia, Villa fought back from 2-0 down to 2-2 before Branislav Ivanovic and Torres clinched a win that moved Chelsea two points behind fourth-place Tottenham.

Daniel Sturridge and Ivanovic put Chelsea ahead before James Collins and Eric Lichaj brought Villa level.

Petrov was visibly emotional as he waved from the stands to the fans giving him a standing ovation.

It was Chelsea's sixth win in eight games under interim coach Roberto Di Matteo, although Spurs can restore its lead over its London rival to five points if it beats Swansea on Sunday.

Everton is seventh after a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion and Clint Dempsey scored his 13th Premier League goal of the season to help Fulham beat Norwich 2-1.

Also, Wigan boosted its chances of avoiding relegation with a 2-0 win over Stoke, and last-place Wolverhampton Wanderers looks sure to be demoted after a 3-2 home defeat against Bolton.

Knowing specific characteristics of the majority of buyers will help a small business to target specific audiences when advertising. Surveys can be set up to help with the process of finding out which buyers would be more than likely to shop at the small business.

Small business owners have to be willing to track their progress and figure out where the leads are coming from so that they know which advertisements are working and which advertisements are not. This is important but unfortunately, too many small business owners completely forget about tracking the data from advertisements. When a customer calls the business or comes in, the first question that should be asked is something along the lines of, ?How did you hear about our business??

Last but certainly not least, small business owners have to come up with an advertising strategy. The owner needs to decide which type of advertising works best for the business and run with the opportunity. Creative and quality advertisements are a must because they are what will engage the audience, getting them interested in the business and what the small business has to offer to them.

Are pesticides responsible for bee deaths? (+video)

Important pollinators, both bumblebees and honeybees have trouble functioning after being exposed to pesticides, two new studies say. Industry experts question several aspects of the work.

A common class of pesticide is causing problems for honeybees and bumblebees, important species already in trouble, two studies suggest.

But the findings don't explain all the reasons behind a long-running?bee?decline, and other experts found one of the studies less than convincing.

The new research suggests the chemicals used in the pesticide ? designed to attack the central nervous system of insects ? also reduces the weight and number of queens in bumblebee hives. These pesticides also cause honeybees to become disoriented and fail to return to their hives, the researchers concluded.

The two studies were published online Thursday in the journal Science.

Just last week activists filed a petition with more than a million signatures asking the government to ban the class of pesticides called neonicotinoids. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it is re-evaluating the chemicals and is seeking scientific help.

For more than a decade, pollinators of all types have been in decline, mostly because of habitat loss and perhaps some pesticide use. In the past five years, a new mysterious honeybee problem, colony collapse disorder, has further attacked hives. But over the last couple of years, that problem has been observed a bit less, said Jeff Pettis, lead?bee?researcher at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's lab in Beltsville, Md.

Other studies have also found problems with the pesticide class singled out in the new research. These "strengthen the case for more thorough re-assessing," said University of Illinois entomology professor May Berenbaum, who wasn't involved in the new studies. "But this is not a slam-dunk indictment that could compel a ban. It's complicated."

In the honeybee study, French scientists glued tiny radio transmitters to the?bees?managed for orchard pollination. The?bees?were tracked when they came and left the hive. The?bees?that were dosed with neonicotinoids were two to three times more likely not to return.

In the bumblebee study, British researchers dosed?bees?with the pesticide and moved their hives out into the field. After six weeks, they found the pesticide-treated hives were 10 percent lighter than those that weren't treated. And more important, the hives that had pesticides lost about 85 percent of their queens.

Bayer Crop Sciences, which is the leading producer of this type of pesticide, says it is used on 90 percent of the corn grown in the U.S. and is safe. Bayer eco-toxicologist David Fischer said the honeybee study used unrealistically high doses of the chemicals, amounts that would not be used on crops?bees normally pollinate.

Berenbaum, Pettis and a third outside scientist said the bumblebee study was a more convincing study than the honeybee research because it used lower doses and didn't make as many assumptions.

Bees?are needed to pollinate fruit, vegetables and nuts. Without them experts say our diets would be very bland. Honeybees, which aren't native to America, are managed by professional beekeepers, carted from farm to orchard and raised to produce honey. Bumblebees, native to this country, are wild pollinators.

There are statistics given at the end of "Miss Bala" about how many people have died in the drug wars in northern Mexico. Now, using a beauty pageant may seem like a screwy way at first to get there but according to the literature, a beauty queen is supposed to represent her subjects and Laura does, if you mean her subjects include those trapped in between the authorities and the criminals. The movie is on neither side, as it paints the authorities as corrupt and in cold blooded fashion Lino lets the DEA know that they are not welcome in Mexico. All of which is seen through Laura's eyes as she provides a ground level view of what goes on around her for the viewer, as she becomes little more than a commodity to the criminals with her body(notice how it is described, by the way) used and abused, with little choice in her actions. Even with large amounts of money on the table, she is not really tempted, either, with the exception of a scene in an upscale dress shop. The most important lesson in all of this is to always listen to your parents.

Well, that was intense. After 48 hours of epic Elite Eight battles, we've reached the Final Four of MTV's Musical March Madness. And while making it this far is certainly an accomplishment, there's not exactly a whole lot of time to sit around and savor it.

That's because voting in our Final Four matchups is already under way, and polls will remain open until Sunday (April 1) at midnight ET. You've carried your favorite band to the cusp of championship glory, but can you help push them over the top?

#5 My Chemical Romance vs. #5 Green Day My Chem are the champions of the Midwest region, having survived a furious rally from upset-minded Metallica in the Elite Eight (seriously, with more than 600,000 votes cast, MCR won by 400). Meanwhile, defending MMM champs Green Day had to stage a serious comeback of their own against Adam Lambert, who led until late Thursday before succumbing to GD's full-court press. At this point of the tournament, there truly are no easy matchups, and this one, well, it's going to be a war. Both bands have been put through the wringer, and both know how to win a close contest; can My Chemical Romance finally take home the MMM title (they've been in the Final Four three consecutive years), or will Green Day make history as the first band to repeat as champions? All we can do is wait and see ...

#1 Evanescence vs. #12 Tokio Hotel Speaking of history: Congratulations to Evanescence, the first #1 seed to make the MMM Final Four. They've battled hard throughout the tournament, having bested tough foes like Paramore, Linkin Park and Dave Matthews Band just to reach this point. As a reward, they draw perhaps the toughest opponent in the entire field: Tokio Hotel, a band that's steamrolled their way through the competition. They've throttled all challengers and even got revenge (big time) against rivals Coheed and Cambria in the Elite Eight. For her premiere dance, Martina delivered a flawed, 20-point foxtrot head judge Len Goodman called ?too careful.? Her week two performance, the jive, lacked attack and wasn?t much better. In fact, the judges gave her a paltry score of 17. Judge Bruno Tonioli even told her, ?I think that serve went into the net. You couldn?t keep up with the dance.? And Carrie Ann Inaba couldn?t find much to praise about it. ?That was sad,? the judge said before adding, ?I loved your attitude!? Ouch.

And the tennis great knew she had screwed up. ?I blew it like I haven?t blown it!? she said after her performance. ?I can?t believe I did that.?

Not surprisingly, her subpar performances landed her at the bottom of the leaderboard both weeks, with a total score of 37 out of 60.

Though her dance moves lacked the grace and precision that she delivered on the tennis courts, Martina had poise to spare and didn?t play the blame game when she said her goodbyes. ?It was an amazing experience,? she said of her short stint on ?Dancing.? ?I just wish it had lasted longer. I gave it everything I had, but I blew it yesterday.?

On the subject of ?blowing it,? fans of the show might also note that the judges screwed up the first two weeks of this season by appearing to grade certain pairs by different standards. Yes, we?re talking about Melissa Gilbert and pro partner Maks Chmerkovskiy, who were criticized for their ambitious and not-all-that-bad dances, while others who made more obvious goofs (including missed steps) scored higher and received encouragement from the panel.

But it was the actress and the ballroom bad boy who were triumphant for this first elimination round. The two were the first pair Tom announced as safe for the week. With that revelation, Maks broke into a huge grin and excitedly pumped his fist into the air. It was perhaps the happiest we?ve seen the pro since the judges started nitpicking his partner in week one.

He wasn?t the only one to be uber excited to advance to the third week. When ?View? co-host Sherri Shepherd learned her fate, she busted out with a wild celebratory dance that left the others in awe of her energy.

Rare NZ dolphin survival boosted

Hector's dolphins living off the coast of Christchurch, New Zealand have benefitted from the area's special designation, say scientists.

Researchers studied the animals, one of the world's most endangered species of dolphin, for 21 years.

Their results show that the survival rate of the dolphins has increased by 5.4% since the Marine Protection Area (MPA) was declared.

The findings are published in the Journal of Applied Ecology.

"This is the first evidence that Marine Protected Areas can be effective for marine mammals. We found a significant improvement in the survival rate," said Dr Liz Slooten from the University of Otago who undertook the research.

In 1988 the Banks Peninsula Marine Mammal Sanctuary was established in the hope that resident dolphins would be protected from fatalities associated with the gillnet and trawling activities of the fishing industry.

A team of ecologists conducted regular photo identification of the dolphins for 21 years, starting two years before the area was officially protected.

"We can identify individual dolphins from their battle scars - which range from small nicks out of the dorsal fin to major scarring following shark attacks," explained Dr Slooten.

The researchers used the photographs to create a population model; with this they were able to analyse how the animals had fared over two decades.

"Estimating population changes in marine mammals is challenging, often requiring many years of research to produce data accurate enough to detect these kinds of biological changes," said Dr Slooten.

"It seems to take a long time for a dolphin population to respond to protection, and therefore a long-term study to detect [any] improvement."

'Not safe yet'

The teams models suggested that the dolphins' survival rate had increased by 5.4% - a positive result but not what the team had expected.

"At first, we were surprised that the survival rates had not increased further," said Dr Slooten, "Once the Banks Peninsula area was protected, we had expected the problem to be solved and the population to be healthy and recovering."

The team found that the dolphins did not spend the whole year in the protected area, which reached four nautical miles offshore.

In the winter, more than half the dolphins were found up to 16 nautical miles outside of the MPA.

"The dolphins don't care how far offshore they are, their distribution relates to water depth," Dr Slooten explained.

The New Zealand government is now considering whether to extend MPAs where Hector's dolphins are found.

"The good news is that the situation has improved. The population was doing a nose-dive, declining at 6% per year, and now it's only declining slowly [at] about 1% per year," said Dr Slooten.

"The bad news is that the protected area is still too small. It would need to be extended further offshore to allow the population to stop declining and better still to grow and recover towards its original population size."

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? President Barack Obama is warning North Korea and Iran that their options are few and their friends fewer as those nations refuse to back down from actions the world sees as menacing.

"By now it should be clear," Obama said, addressing North Korea from the South Korean capital only about 30 miles away. "Your provocations and pursuit of nuclear weapons have not achieved the security you seek, they have undermined it. Instead of the dignity you desire, you are more isolated."

Obama also met separately with leaders of the two nations ? Russia and China ? that have thwarted US diplomatic efforts on Syria, and to a lesser extent Iran. But the looming threat posed by nearby nuclear-equipped North Korea was the main event.

Seoul warned Monday that it might shoot down parts of a North Korean rocket if they violate South Korean territory, as worries about what Washington calls a long-range missile test overshadowed an international nuclear security summit. The summit of more than 50 nations opens with a dinner Monday.

In a direct challenge to North Korean leaders, Obama implored them "to have the courage to pursue peace."

Obama said the world has made progress in reducing the threat of nuclear material but cautioned "we're under no illusions."

He declared flatly that the United States has more nuclear weapons than it needs and can cut its arsenal without weakening its security or that of its allies. He pledged to keep trying to rid the world of nuclear weapons despite disagreements with Russia over the next phase of a largely successful disarmament program he sees as a hallmark of his presidency.

He also faces long if not impossible odds of winning Republican assent to new reductions in the US arsenal.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev noted as much, telling Obama at what will be their last meeting that progress on hard political issues is difficult "in an election year."

As Obama spoke of peace, tensions were rising in the Korean peninsula. Seoul warned it might shoot down parts of a North Korean rocket carrying a satellite if it violates South Korean territory. The United States maintains the launch amounts to a test of North Korea's long-range rocketry.

In unusually personal terms, Obama said he spoke of his wish for further nuclear reductions as the president of the only nation ever to use nuclear weapons, as a commander whose country's nuclear codes are never far from his side, and as a protective father eager to erase the threat of nuclear annihilation.

Obama was meeting on the sidelines of the summit with Chinese President Hu Jintao, holding talks expected to focus on U.S. frustrations with China's slow progress in pushing North Korea to comply with international obligations.

In brief remarks ahead of that meeting, Obama says he is looking forward to a constructive meeting. Obama says he and Hu will also discuss Iran and Sudan.

Obama and Medvedev concluded their meeting with a frank acknowledgement of continued tensions between their countries on key issues, including Syria and missile defense.

Obama met later Monday with the leader of Kazakhstan, crediting President Nursultan Nazarbayev for his work in securing nuclear materials.

In remarks at Hankuk University, Obama aimed his most stern remarks to North Korea's leaders, saying the internationally isolated country needs to change its ways because continuing down the same path will lead to "more broken dreams" and "more isolation." His blunt remarks came a day after he visited the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea and described the experience as akin to witnessing a "time warp" of despair.

"Even as we have more work to do, we can already say with confidence that we have more nuclear weapons than we need," he said. "I firmly believe that we can ensure the security of the United States and our allies, maintain a strong deterrent against any threat, and still pursue further reductions in our nuclear arsenal."

Obama also reiterated his warning to Iran, which the U.S. and its allies contend is defying its international obligations by pursuing an illicit nuclear program.

"Iran's leaders must understand that there is no escaping the choice before it. Iran must act with the seriousness and sense of urgency that this moment demands," Obama said. "Iran must meet its obligations."

Facing down Iran and North Korea, Obama said a "new international norm" was emerging to deal with the two nations' intransigence. "Treaties are binding. Rules will be enforced. And violations will have consequences," Obama said. "Because we refuse to consign ourselves to a future where more and more regimes possess the world's most deadly weapons."

Obama said the U.S. was also moving forward with Russia to eliminate enough plutonium for about 17,000 nuclear weapons and turn it into electricity. And he heralded an earlier agreement with Russia to reduce nuclear arsenals under the New START Treaty, which Obama called "the most comprehensive arms control agreement in nearly two decades."

"When we're done, we'll have cut American and Russian deployed nuclear warheads to their lowest levels since the 1950s," he said.

Obama also prodded Russia in a new way, saying he would seek discussions with Moscow on an unprecedented front: reducing not only strategic nuclear warheads, but also tactical weapons and warheads in reserve. He said he planned to discuss that proposition with former leader Vladimir Putin, who will return to the presidency later this spring after winning an election held earlier this year, when they meet in May.

After his meeting with Medvedev, Obama said the U.S. and Russia have "more work to do" to bridge their differences, including their approach to violence in Syria. The U.S. has sharply criticized Russia for opposing U.N. Security Council action calling on Syria's president to leave power.

Despite their differences, Medvedev says the relationship between the U.S. and Russia has reached its "best level".
