The Safety Communications Radio System Will Go From Analog To ...

The radio communications system serving first responders in Central Virginia for more than 15 years will be replaced. The new equipment will go from analog to the more reliable digital system. The safety communications infrastructure for Lynchburg and Bedford and Amherst and Bedford counties will include more than 10 towers and sites making it possible for the providers to communicate with each other and with dispatch centers especially in the more rural areas. According to the News & Advance, the localities will share in the costs to finance the needed upgrade by supporting a $13.1 million bond through the Town of Amherst?s Industrial Development Authority. If all resolutions pass, financing will likely close on May 3. The upgrade is expected to last at least another 15 years.
