Question by : How long does it take to get a license for adopting a foster child?
A couple who lives in florda who has 3 children who all go to Emory university, would like to apply for an adoption license. They have a good source amount of income and nice living condition. How long would this process take? Once they do get their license can they adopt right away? Can they adopt someone who is from california rather than florida? Does the birth parent have to consent to them?

Usually it takes a few months. First the couple need to contact their local Department of Human Services and talk to an adoption worker. Explain the situation and the worker will send out paperwork to fill out ? basic information. Then they will arrange for a home visit. This is to make sure the family have enough room for any new children that arrive ? kids must have their owns beds to sleep in, kids of opposite genders may not sleep in the same room, etc.

There will typicall be a couple of interviews with the potential adoptive parents ? state laws vary, so look on line for your state laws.

Once you have your homestudy done and final approval, you are free to adopt any child legally free for adoption who is currently in foster care. Across state lines gets a bit more challenging, but nothing that cannot be overcome with time and effort.

Once a child is legally free for adoption, it means his or her biological parents? rights have been terminated, so no, they don?t have to consent to the adoption. However, it is in the best interests of the adoptive parents to maintain as much contact as is safe for the children to maintain with their biological families. Cutting off all contact only backfires in the end.

A friend of mine currently has the biological brother of her daughter visiting their home. Their parents aren?t safe people but her brother and some aunties are, so they keep in contact with them.
