The NBA's global impact continues to be seen.
Before July 16, the Chinese abbreviation of the National Basketball Association was "Mei Zhi Lan."
That won't be the case now that the sixth edition of the Chinese dictionary implemented a number of new words to make for a more "fashionable" presentation with an online emphasis. The NBA was one of those words added and now "Mei Zhi Lan" can be officially replaced.
"No need to call it Mei Zhi Lan anymore", Mr. Yu Dianli, manager of Commercial Press and publisher of the dictionary, said Sunday.
The move makes sense considering more fans know the league as the NBA than identify it as "Mei Zhi Lan." However, as per a rule that says English abbreviations are not allowed to be used on TV media, NBA was replaced by Mei Zhi Lan and F1 had to be replaced by the full Chinese translation of Formula One.
The new edition contains more than 600 new characters, more than 3,000 new words and expressions and 400 new definitions to the existing words. The new dictionary has more than 69,000 entries in total.
A number of new words are frequently used online and look very "fashionable", such as geili (awesome), leiren (shocking), zhainan (indoorsy man) and zhainu (indoorsy woman).
